Recruiting: DL Johnny Daniels

Having a brother who played at rival Mississippi State will certainly give the Bulldogs a leg up but the Ole Miss Rebels are not entirely out of the hunt for talented defensive tackle Johnny Daniels. The 6-foot-2, 267-pounder will make his decision after the 2002 football season is complete and a lot can happen between now and then. It is possible the Daniels home could produce a player for the other instate SEC program when all is said and done as the Rebels have made the final four.

"I'm looking the hardest at Auburn, Mississippi State, Miami, and Ole Miss," said Daniels. "Ole Miss has offered and all four of them called me in May."

Daniels preps at Vicksburg High School and his junior season produced 87 tackles and 11 sacks. His efforts were strong enough to please the coaches at Southern Miss, Ole Miss, Nicholls State, and Mississippi State when Daniels showed up for their summer camps.

Alfred Daniels, Johnny's brother, played running back at Mississippi State and his uncle, Sylvester Stamps, played at Jackson State. Stamps also played for the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League. Having former college athletes in the family provides some experience with the recruiting process and Daniels is taking his time.

"I'm going to wait until after football season to make my decision," said Daniels.

Vicksburg High School opens their season at home against Wayne County.
