Fuller Smith's college baseball road has taken him from Vestavia Hills High in Birmingham to Oklahoma State to Hill Junior College in Hillsboro, Texas, and now to Ole Miss.
Smith, a junior listed at 6-feet and 205 pounds, launched a rocket out of Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field Wednesday off one of Ole Miss' best pitchers in Will Kline.
It was a two-run shot that was bound to impress the more than 20 pro scouts in attendance.
In the Scout Day intrasquad, in addition to his homer, Smith got a single, and was a bit lucky in fact, as Rebel infielders and outfielders converging to catch it lost the ball in the sun. Pitcher Nick Hetland was on the mound at this point in the contest.
So Smith was all smiles after his "debut" as a Rebel. But it's something he's worked toward for a while.
"It was good to get out here and compete today," said Smith, who played in left field on the blue team for the short, three-inning intrasquad. "I was just happy to have a good day today. Getting a hit off our pitchers isn't easy."
Smith was at Ole Miss all summer in school and actually attended the Regional and Super Regional. He knows what Ole Miss baseball is all about.
"I got here to go to summer school and all that was going on," he said. "That was fun to be a part of."
Smith, who bats and throws left, admitted after the intrasquad that he used to be a little guy, thin and not with a whole lot of bulk. That's changed over the years as he's tried to build up his body to be able to do more of what he did on Wednesday.
"I also worked out all summer," he said. "I was a really small guy coming out of high school. I was like a string bean. I knew I wasn't going to have great speed, so the last few years I tried to get bigger and stronger."
That he has as Smith is likely one of the strongest guys on the Rebel squad. The November 2005 Ole Miss signee is ready to keep it going.
"I've been licking at the chops to get out here," he said. "This is what I've been waiting for."
The Rebels will intrasquad at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
