Hardin commits for 2008

Gavin Hardin, one of the premier juniors in the state of Tennessee, wanted to get the pressure of recruiting behind him before his senior season began. The talented junior LB went with "the school that showed me the most love" with his early commitment yesterday. Read about it inside.

Gavin Hardin said it didn't take him long to make up his mind about where he will go to college.

The 6-4, 240-pound linebacker out of Jackson Central Merry in Jackson, TN, went with his heart.

"Ole Miss is close to home and they gave me a lot of love," said Hardin, considered by many as the top junior in Tennessee. "I want to go somewhere where I am wanted and Ole Miss proved to me they wanted me the most. You can feel something like that instantly. Ole Miss was also my first offer. That told me they had no doubts about my ability or anything. That's love. I got some attention from UT and Alabama, but not like Ole Miss."

Hardin made All-West Tennessee last yer after compiling 62 tackles (45 solos), five QB sacks and three forced fumbles.

"I thought I had a shot at All-State, but that team was mostly seniors. I'll get it this year, I think," said Gavin. "I had a good junior season, but I'm expecting to have a great senior season."

Gavin, who says he has been timed in a 4.5 in the 40 yard dash, wasn't born until 1989, but he said he was aware of other Central Merry players who have gone to Ole Miss - LB Shawn Cobb being one of them.

"I know there is an Ole Miss connection to Central Merry and I'm proud to follow their footsteps," he said.

Hardin believes his strength on the field lies in his aggression and that is also his weakness - right now.

"I read plays real well and blow up plays well, but I need to learn to be more patient. Sometimes I overrun plays because I am too anxious to get in the mix and wreck things," he laughed. "I'll learn patience because I'm going to work on it."

Gavin said his grades are good, but he hasn't taken the ACT yet.

"I am set to take th ACT twice this spring - just in case, but my grades are good and I expect to make a qualifying ACT score on my first attempt in March," he added. "My core courses are good."

Hardin said as far as he is concerned his recruitment is over, even though it's a year away from signing day 2008.

"I'm solid. I'm done. I'm not going on any visits and stuff like that. I'm going to visit Ole Miss as much as I can, starting with Junior Day February 24th," he closed. "I'm excited about my choice and will stick with it."

Hardin joins Tupelo RB Kenneth Davis as a 2008 Rebel commitment.
