Daniel Calvin, a 6-4, 310-pound defensive lineman from Bakersfield College in Bakersfield, CA, isn't sure if he will be a mid-term signee next year - which would be his preference if possible- or a signee next February, but there is one certainty - he has committed to Ole Miss no matter when he becomes eligible to sign.
"Ole Miss has been in contact with me since high school. They have always stayed in contact and have told me all along they like the way I play the game," said Calvin, who will be a sophomore defensive tackle/nose tackle at Bakersfield next season. "I like Coach (Ryan) Nielsen and Coach O. They are excited about Ole Miss football and I know Corey (Actis) has done well there."
Calvin said he hasn't gotten a lot of recruiting attention - yet, but UCLA, besides Ole Miss, has made a run at him thus far in the early going.
Daniel, who will be 19 on the 25th of February, has a goal of being a mid-term signee with the Rebels next December, but he's not sure how that stands at this point.
"I have a plan to get out in December and come to Ole Miss right after the season, but I'll have to do real well in the classroom to get it done. We'll see," he said. "I'm not sure how that will pan out, but that is my goal."
Calvin was his areas Defensive Player of the Year at Bakersfield HS as a senior and made second-team All-Conference as a freshman at Bakersfield College for his efforts in the 2006 season.
He had to be prompted to talk about his strengths as a football player, preferring to talk about what he needs to improve first.
"Like all junior college guys looking to move up to D-1, I have to get quicker and stronger," he noted. "I also want to lose a little weight and tone up.
"For the level I'm on right now, I have pretty good feet for someone over 300 pounds and I use my hands well. I also find the ball quickly as a play develops."
In the weight room, Calvin has benched 365 pounds and squatted 435.
"I know that has to improve, but I am young and willing to work. I'll get my lifts up in the next year," he stated.
Calvin will visit Ole Miss in September.
"I will come to Ole Miss during our bye week at Bakersfield. Some people have asked me if distance from home is a factor. It's not," he cloed.
Calvin joins Gavin Hardin, Kenneth Davis and Terry Levy as 2008 commitments.
