Which way will this Cole go?

Drew Cole (DB, Picayune, MS) - The Cole family is no stranger to the game of football.

Father, Hoppy Cole, played offensive guard for the Rebels during the Sloan era. Brother, Mit Cole, is a rising senior and plays tight end for the LSU Tigers. And even Drew's grandfather, played offensive tackle for the La Lafayette.

Which way will the youngest Cole go?

"Right now, I am getting a lot of letters, but the main ones are Auburn. I get hand written letters from Coaches Dunn and Muschamp every week. Ole Miss, Coach Corrae sends me hand written letters every week too. And LSU and MSU are writing weekly too. Tennessee, Vandy, Stanford, and Memphis are sending a bunch of letters, but the schools that are showing me the most interest are MSU, Ole Miss, and Auburn."

Any early offers?

"I got a letter from MSU that kind of hinted at one, but I will find out at Jr Day for sure. I do not want to say I have one and not end up having one, so I am going to wait until I get up there and talk to them about it first."

Which Jr Days will Drew visit this Spring?

"Right now, I am going to Auburn, Ole Miss, and MSU. I was invited to LSU's, but it is the same day as Ole Miss' this Saturday. I had already committed to go to Ole Miss, so I am going to go to LSU on an unofficial visit sometime this Spring."

What stands out about each college?

Ole Miss - "My dad played there, and my mother graduated there. I grew up a huge Ole Miss fan, and I grew up going to all of their games. It is a small town in Mississippi, and I am a small town Mississippi boy. They have a new staff, and I think it is going to work out for them."

Auburn - "They have a small town as well. Coach Dun recruited my bother when he was in high school, so he has been a long time family friend. Coach Muschamp recruited my bother when he was at LSU, so we have a long history with Coach Muschamp. He had me coming over to the LSU camps ever since I was in 8th grade. And Auburn wins football games. That never hurts either."

LSU - "They have some of the best facilities I have seen. Everybody has good facilities, but they have exceptional facilities. My brother goes there too. And Coach Henson keeps in touch with me for LSU. He also coaches tight end at LSU, so that is my brother's position coach. We know each other pretty well. I like LSU too."

MSU - "They have great facilities, as well as the other three (schools). Coach Croom is a great guy, and I like all of the new staff. Like Ole Miss, they are in a rebuilding stage, but when they get the right players there, I think they will be real successful."

Drew's sophomore season saw him burst on to the scene with 51 tackles and 2 interceptions while manning the CB position. Cole's junior season saw him collect 59 tackles, 1 interception, and 16 pass breakups. On offense, he had 82 carries for 601 yds and 9 touchdowns. This was good enough to earn a spot on the Coaches 2006 4A All-State squad.

The 6' 0", 180 pounder also helped Picayune to an undefeated regular season last year.

"We had a real good season. Our first three games we played 5A teams in Moss Point, Gulfport, and Harrison Central. We started district play after that and beat all of them by 30 plus points. We did not play in a real strong District, but we took care of business. We played McComb and West Jones in the first two rounds of the playoffs, and then we got beat by Wayne County in the 3rd round by 8 points."

Drew ran a 4.38 at one of the combines last year and recorded a 10.9 100 Meter run last season in track. With speed and size, which position will Cole play on the next level?

"Cornerback or free safety. It could be either one. Some tell me corner and others tell me free safety."

What does Cole do well at defensive back?

"I am a good open field tackler, and I run a lot of people down from behind. I have good speed, and I can cover pretty well."

And like all good defensive backs, Drew realizes there are a couple of technique issues he needs to fine tune.

"I need to work on my hips getting out of the back pedal. And my overall strength could be better."

Cole's family history has taught him a few things.

"You always have to stay humble, and you realize that football is a team game, not an individual one. And as far as recruiting goes, you take everything slow, and let it come to you and have fun with it."

What will be the important factors when it does come decision time?

"I will look at their needs at my position and what kind of defense they run. Do they play man or zone? I like playing zone because I like to read the QB and break on the ball instead of watching your man's hips, so I watch their schemes a lot."

What has he learned about the schemes from the four main schools?

"I have studied Auburn a lot because I watched Coach Muschamp when he was at LSU and Miami. He does a lot of different things. He runs CB's on blitzes, plays them man, and plays them in some zone. He keeps you off balance. I like that. LSU plays a lot of zone, and I have not studied Ole Miss or MSU enough to give you an analysis on them yet."

Drew carries a 4.0 GPA / 19 ACT.
