Rebels gain commitment from national prospect

Malcolm White (PF, Genesis One, MS) - The Rebels have been looking for the prospect that could put them on the national recruiting map, and it looks like they have found their man in the Baton Rouge native.

"I committed to Ole Miss today," added Malcolm White. "I came on a visit with my coaches from Genesis One today, a few of my teammates, and my mother. I fell in love with their campus and their coaches, plus my man AK (Andy Kennedy). He developed Kenyan Martin and Jason Maxfield, so I know he can make me an impact player and try to get me to the next level, the NBA. That has always been my dream, to play in the NBA. Plus, they care for you more than just basketball. They worry about your education and becoming a man. It is like a family over there."

What did White's mother think of his decision?

"She loved their campus too. She told me it feels like a home away from home to her. If she likes it, I like it. It is not too far from home so she can come to my games too."

Has White had a chance to take in anymore visits before making a decision?

"I have already visited LSU, Wake Forest and Southern Cal. They are good schools, but Ole Miss just felt more like home. I just liked everything about it. Their fans support their team so well. I liked their atmosphere and environment more. The fans support their players so well. Everybody loves you down there. Everywhere I went, their fans were telling me how badly they wanted me."

Who else was involved in Malcolm's recruitment?

"Arizona, Kentucky, Florida State, Georgia also offered me. There were a bunch of schools really."

Coach Kennedy for Ole Miss had one message for Malcolm and that was?

"He told me that he needed a big man that could get up and down the court, and I was his man. Coach told me that he needed his big men to play above the rim and play in an uptempo offense and defense. He does not want anybody who plays with his back to the basket. He wants his big men to be able to take his man off of the dribble, but at the same time, have the defensive presence to get the dirty rebounds and block the shots in the paint. That is my game. I just go and go and go."

The 6' 9", 220 pounder who has the wingspan of someone that is 7' 2" and feels like his game matches Coach AK's criteria to a tee.

"I am a great power player. I can finish around the rim, knock down the 15 footer, rebound, block shots, and run the floor well. But most importantly, I can finish."

Malcolm finished the '06/'07 campaign with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 blocks a game for the National Runner-ups, Genesis One.

"I had a pretty good season. Not high scoring, but just playing defense, rebounding the ball, trying to be a team leader. I had my moments too, offensively, but I was just trying to win us a championship. In order for us to do that, they needed for me to do the dirty things. Coach Evans and Dixon did an awesome job working on my jump shot. They are real good coaches. But most importantly, I am getting a good Christian education, and they are making the best of me. I am just glad that I got in this program. I am looking to do even bigger things at Ole Miss."

White transferred to Genesis One from St. Helena Central.
