Rebels visit Southern Miss

Ole Miss has already defeated Southern Mississippi on a neutral field and now the Rebels look for the sweep in front of a hostile environment as they visit the Golden Eagles for a 6:30 p.m. start Wednesday.

The No. 13 Rebels (24-10) took a walk-off 6-5 win against USM (20-13) on March 27 in Pearl, and lead the overall series 65-37. Ole Miss is coming off a weekend where it took two-of-three from Georgia, while Southern Miss also had a successful weekend with a series win over Central Florida.

"We're playing a very good team in Southern Miss and playing them at their place where they always seem to have a record crowd when we go down there," head coach Mike Bianco said. "It's always a great game."

Sophomore Brett Bukvich (4-1, 3.64) will get the nod on the mound for Ole Miss with his second straight midweek start. Bukvich picked up the victory over Arkansas State after allowing three runs in four innings of work.

The left-hander is starting, but Bianco hopes for several more arms to have a chance on Wednesday.

"We'd like to pitch some other guys because our starters pitch so well on the weekend and so guys like (Jesse) Simpson and (Phillip) Irwin don't get in as much, but they're still guys who we can count on and we will need down the line."

Southern Miss is countering with Mike Cashion (0-0, 6.40). The junior has compiled ten innings and was the starter against Ole Miss earlier in the season. Cashion had a no-decision after going 3.1 innings and allowing three runs.

Ole Miss is trying to sweep the season series against the Golden Eagles for the first time since 2001. USM last swept the Rebels in 2004, going 3-0.

The Rebels are currently one-game back of Arkansas in the SEC West and are trying to keep momentum before heading to Baton Rouge for a three-game set with LSU this weekend. Ole Miss hasn't taken a series from LSU on the road since 1982.

"This is a big game because it is the next one," second baseman Zach Miller said. "The big thing is to keep playing well every time out no matter who the opponent is. We just need wins and to take care of business."

The Ole Miss-Southern game can be heard locally around Oxford on 105.5 WTNM-FM Supertalk Mississippi; Air time is 30 minutes prior to first pitch. It is also available statewide on the Ole Miss Radio Network with David Kellum and Richard Cross.

Live Stats can be found at, but Dot TV will not be accessible due to Southern Miss refusing Ole Miss the right to broadcast.
