Brett Wallace (Arizona State) hit his first home run of the summer, in his first at-bat. Justin Smoak (South Carolina) had what proved to be the go-ahead homer in the third, along with an RBI double in the first.
The Gulls made it 5-4 in the eighth off of Josh Romanski (San Diego), who gave up a three-run home run to Drew Poulk. Cody Satterwhite (Ole Miss) got the save, putting two runners on in the ninth, before getting a ground to end it.
Team USA took a 4-0 lead in the first, taking out Saturday's loss on Newport starter and loser Adam Wilk. An RBI double by Smoak started the rally, before a three-run home run to right center by Wallace, gave the Americans a four-run cushion. Smoak then hit his third home run of the summer in the third to give the U.S. a 5-0 lead.
Wilk went the first four innings, setting down after a rough start. The Newport pitching staff gave up just one hit after the third inning.
Jacob Thompson (Virginia) went a pre-determined two scoreless innings, giving up a hit, walking two and striking out another two. Mike Minor (Vanderbilt) struck out four over the next two innings for the win, striking out the side in the fourth. Eric Surcamp (North Carolina) retired the side in order in the fifth, before giving up a run on two hits in the sixth.
Newport starter Adam Wilk was a freshman for Team USA Head Coach Mike Weathers at Long Beach State this past year. Wilk had now allowed a run in 11 innings and two starts prior to giving up runs in the first... Justin Smoak had four multi-RBI games the first week... the team is slated to pair down its roster on Monday to a 20-man Pan American squad, and a few others, who will be available the rest of the summer... Team USA veteran, Jemile Weeks, will not join the club from Miami due to injury, opening up a roster spot.
Team USA takes Monday off before heading home to North Carolina from June 26 to July 9 to face Chinese Taipei (June 29-July 3) and Japan (July 4-9). The Chinese Taipei series will start in Burlington, N.C. (June 29-30), continue to Cary, NC (July 1-2) and finish off in Kannapolis, N.C. (July 3).
