Diamond Rebs: Summer update

Members of the Rebel baseball team are competing in wood-bat leagues all over the country. Go inside for an update on their summers.

Team USA is off to a solid 8-1 start as both Lance Lynn and Cody Satterwhite are throwing well in limited duty. Lynn holds a 0-0 record in one appearance, but the big right-hander tossed three scoreless innings, striking out four in that outing. Satterwhite is 1-0 with one save and a 1.93 ERA in 4.2 innings pitched. The rising junior has struck out seven and walked four. USA is in the middle of a series with China before taking on Japan five times beginning July 4.

The Bourne Braves are setting the pace in the Cape Cod League at 10-3, and Brett Basham is excelling at the plate. Basham is hitting .389 after 18 plate appearances. The Knoxville, Tenn., native has started five games at catcher and one at designated hitter.

Bourne lost some expected offense when former Rebel Andrew Clark had to leave the league with an ongoing shoulder injury. Clark had surgery on the shoulder before the 2007 college season, but it appears to be much more severe at this point. He was hitting .200 before having to quit.

There is a definite amount of Ole Miss flavor within the Delaware Cows, and those players are pacing the league leaders. Matt Smith and Evan Button are currently one-two in team batting average at .361 and .343 respectively, while Button is 4-5 in stolen bases. Smith also has two saves with the successful but odd line of two appearances, 0.2 innings pitched and two strikeouts. Nathan Baker hasn't allowed an earned run in two innings of work for the Cows, who are 15-4 on the year.

Rebel hurler Brett Bukvich left the continental U.S., and is playing with the Anchorage Glacier Pilots this summer. The southpaw is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA after one start. Bukvich went six innings and allowed two runs while striking out five and not walking anyone.

The Thomasville HiToms are leading their division at 18-8 and feature four Rebels on the roster. Rising sophomore Wade Broyles is 3-0 after 11 appearances and one start. Broyles has yet to allow an earned run in 19.1 innings and has 30 strikeouts and seven walks. Opponents are hitting a paltry .106 against Broyles.

Justin Cryer is throwing well also with a 1.69 ERA in six outings. Cryer has 13 Ks and two walks in 10.2 innings. Kevin Parker has been roughed up with and 0-3 record and 4.70 ERA in 15.1 innings. The Lafayette County product has struck out 12 and walked nine. All-SEC freshman Zach Miller is hitting .265 in nine starts and one appearance off the bench.
