Track and field/cross country honors

Ole Miss track and field and cross country had one of its finest seasons ever in 2006-07. The following are superlatives from that season. We will follow up with comments from Coach Joe Walker in another story this week.

*** Made the USA World Championship Team (equivalent of making the Olympic Team): Brittney Reese – long jump – 2nd place

*** Competed at USA National Championships: Brittney Reese, Kenyata Coleman, John Yarbrough (made the semis)

*** NCAA Champion: Barnabas Kirui – 3000 steeplechase

*** NCAA Runnerups: Brittney Reese – women's long jump; John Yarbrough – 110 hurdles

*** A record 9 athletes advanced to the semis/final round of the NCAA Championships

*** Highest NCAA team finish outdoor ever for Ole Miss: mens were 12th; women were 27th

*** There have been three Ole Miss athletes win an NCAA title, five counting indoor and outdoor. Ole Miss added one this year and almost added three with the two runnerups.

*** 21 athletes advanced to the NCAA first round Mideast Regional

*** Highest team finish at the NCAA Mideast Regional (81 women's teams and 78 men's teams were there). The Ole Miss men finished 6th and the women finished 10th.

*** NCAA Mideast Regional outdoor male runner of the year: John Yarbrough – 110 hurdles

*** NCAA Mideast Regional indoor field co-athlete of the year: Brittany Reese

*** NCAA Mideast Regional champions: John Yarbrough – 110 hurdles; Brittney Reese – long jump

*** SEC Outdoor Athletes of the Year: Brittney Reese – field (long jump); Barnabas Kirui – running (5K, 10K, 3K, steeplechase)

*** SEC Commissioners Trophy for most individual points in the outdoor meet: Barnabas Kirui – 30 points

*** SEC Outdoor Champions: Brittney Reese, Barnabas Kirui, Charles Bailey

*** SEC Indoor Champions: Brittney Reese (long jump); John Yarbrough (60 hurdles)

*** SEC Male Cross Country Athlete of the Year: Barnabas Kirui

*** SEC Male Freshman of the Year: Barnabas Kirui (cross country)

*** SEC Community Service Team: Charles Bailey, Marlee Kevech
