Offensive line commit in route to Oxford
"I am on my way to Mississippi right now," stated an excited Mario Benavides. "We have the whole family in here, from my grandmother, parents, to my little sister."
When are they expected to arrive at Ole Miss and when will they leave?
"We will get there on Monday morning, and we are leaving Tuesday night. Their staff is reporting back to Ole Miss on Monday morning, so we decided to arrive when they are."
Benavides occurred a wrist injury in the Spring and had surgery on it in May. Due to the injury, he has not attended any camps this summer.
"I have not been doing any traveling. I have just been conditioning. I have not been to any camps. I am just ready to see Ole Miss. I had surgery in May so I did not get to go to any camps. The injury prevented me from working on my upper body summer, but it allowed me to really focus on my lower body strength and my speed. I am running consistently in the 4.9's."
When does Mario expect to be back 100% from the injury?
"Hopefully by the beginning of the season. Coach Orgeron is real cool with it. They knew about my injury, and he told me that they were going to take me no matter what."
When he arrives in Oxford, what will he be keying in on?
"I just want to soak in the whole environment. I hear it is completely different than here. I hear it is beautiful up there."
Mario was recently offered by Louisville and it looks like the Cardinals could be getting a visit from Mario.
"They started calling me in May. Last week they offered me a scholarship. Their coach has been wanting me to call a running back recruit they really want. His name is Jones, I believe. Anyway, he said we have real similar personalities so he wanted us to start talking. I have not spoken with him yet, though. But I have tentatively set up a plan to visit them on September 22. The day they play Syracuse."
Does Benavides still feel solid with his commitment to Ole Miss?
"Yes sir I do. It is one of those deals that if you get an offer from a big school like I have from a Texas Tech or a Louisville, you would be dumb to not at least check their campus out. But I am not expecting anything to come out of it. I am expecting great things when I go over to Ole Miss this week."
Has Mario informed the Ole Miss staff about his intentions to visit other schools?
"Not yet. I am not sure when I want to because nothing is set in stone that I will take those visits. But I will probably go over that with them this week. I am new to this recruiting thing. I obviously still feel strong with my Ole Miss commitment, but I feel like I owe it to myself to check out the schools who are really interested in me. And I am sure Ole Miss wants me to have that opportunity so I will know that they are the best fit for me."
Which schools have now offered Benavides a scholarship?
"I have 11 offers now. From Texas, I have offers from Baylor, Rice, SMU, Texas Tech, North Texas, and Houston. Ole Miss, Iowa State, Louisville, and Navy have also offered me."
