"I'm real excited to get on the field and start practicing," said the 6-foot-1 and a half, 210-pound linebacker from Southwest Dekalb High School in Decatur, Ga. "I'm looking forward to learning the defense and helping the team out."
Williams came to Oxford as soon as he finished up his high school days, and he says that helped him get acclimated to college life.
"I graduated May 26 and I got here May 28," said Williams, a member of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Georgia Top 50 team. "The first day was kinda like ‘I can't believe it got here so fast.' But that was a while back now, and I'm just ready to go to work."
He said being here early in the summer helped in other ways.
"It just helped me get acquainted with the football team and the coaches," he said. "I learned about the workouts, things of that nature. I learned a little bit of the defensive playbook, and I picked up a couple of pounds. Getting here early really helped me out. I got here at 198 (pounds) and now I'm at like 215."
Williams recorded 96 tackles with three quarterback sacks and three forced fumbles as a senior last fall. He was ranked as the No. 34 player in Georgia by Scout.com.
Williams said he would like to play early.
"(Coach O) said as a freshman I'd have a chance to come in and play," Williams said. "He told me if I did my part and worked hard and showed that I want to play and that I can help this team, then I have a chance to get on the field. That's what I'm looking forward to."
Williams said he knows camp will be tough, and he's heard some stories.
"The usual," he smiled and said. "You're going to be tired. It's going to be tough on your brain because you have to learn so much information in such a short period of time. But that comes with football, so hopefully I'll be ready for that."
Scottie Williams fired up about being at UM
