"I had 261 yards rushing and 2 TD's," stated Darius Barksdale.
All eyes were focused on the "University of South Panola", as the man who led them to a 60 game wining streak, head coach Ricky Woods, left for another head coaching job in Georgia.
Enter Coach Lance Pogue from Eupora, and while their might be a new sheriff in town, the results were the same as South Panola defeated Warren Central 31-18 and led the statistical category 367 yards to 61.
But it was the play from Coach Pogue's money man, Darius Barksdale, that carried the Tigers to victory.
"For us to be the best team we can be, Tig's (Darius Barksdale) has to be a big part of it," Coach Lance Pogue told the Clarion Ledger. "He can make things happen. He cramped some, but he kept coming back (had 31 rushing attempts for the game). He is just a phenomenal football player with a great future."
What did Barksdale think about his season opener?
"We played pretty good. I just thank God for letting us come out with a win, and I thank God for giving me an offensive line like those guys. They did all the work, I just rode on their back," added the always humble Darius Barksdale. "Next week will be a big game for us (against Clarksdale). We have to go out and practice hard all week and set the tone from the first snap. If we do that, everything else will work itself out."
Has Barksdale been in talks with the school he is committed to, Ole Miss, about the position he will playing next season for the Rebels?
"No, we do not even talk about that stuff. I just want to be out on the field like Chris (Strong) is doing. That is what I like about Ole Miss, they will put their best players out there no matter how old you are. They give everyone an equal chance."
Did Barksdale get a chance to watch the Ole Miss game Saturday?
"They just got a little tired in the second half, but they played really good in the first half. They have a lot of good young talent, and I think the South Panola guys are really setting the tone for their defense right now. It is going to be fun to play with all of those guys again."
