Packer makes big impact in game one

The Mississippi high school ranks is deep and talented on the defensive line.

And while there has been many debates about who is the best, don't ask Moss Point's Willie Packer for his opinion.

"I really do not get into that stuff," added Willie Paker. "I just want to get a championship before I leave here. I have my offers, now it is just time to play ball."

Yes, the 6' 2", 265 pound lineman does have offers from schools like Tennessee, Ole Miss, USM, and MSU, and he certainly showed why on Friday.

"The game went good. We did not play our best, but we played assignment football and played hard. We beat Picayune 28-14, and they were ranked the #1 team on the coast, so it was tough on us, but we came out on top."

Moss Point had two blocked punts to set up touchdowns from who? No other than Dandy Dozen member, Willie Packer.

"I blocked one in the 2nd quarter, and we scored right before half. Then right after we came out of half-time, I blocked another. That was pretty much the turning point of the game. You could see how deflated they were after we blocked that punt."

Willie also collected 9 tackles and a sack during the game and feels like the hard work he put in this past summer is paying dividends.

"I am just stronger, and I am getting bigger and getting my speed up. Those are the three things I worked hardest on this summer, and I can really tell a difference."

How would Packer rate his play for the season opener?

"I think I came off the ball well, but I need to improve on getting in the backfield quicker and using more techniques."

Saturday brought a couple of phone calls from SEC programs.

"I talked to Ole Miss, and Tennessee called me right before their game."

What did Ole Miss have to say?

"They were just checking on my grades, and making sure I am staying on top of things. They also asked me about our game, and told me to stay in the weight room so I can be ready to play for them next year."

Tennessee had one message for Packer.

"They learned about the verbal agreement about Ole Miss, but they said to keep thinking Tennessee, and he told me to make sure and watch their game against California."

Is Packer thinking Tennessee or is he still solid with his commitment with the Rebels?

"I am still solid with Ole Miss."

In the meantime, Packer has a showdown against Mississippi's top '09 defensive line prospect.

"Yea, we are playing Biloxi on Friday. A lot of people are talking about me and D.J. Fluker, but I do not get into that stuff. He is a great player. The only thing I am going to say is that he better bring his A game, because I am going to bring mine."
