Texas juco star picks Ole Miss
"I just like their winning tradition," added David Phillips. Their school gives me a great chance to get to the World Series."
David also had a chance to visit Ole Miss unofficially in the middle of August and came away impressed.
"They have such a nice school. The campus is beautiful. The school is great."
Coach Rob Reinstetle was also integral in landing the Region XIV All East Conference selection.
"He seems like a really neat guy. The best way I can put it is that he outworked his competition. Coach Rob was the first one to call me. He told me that he wanted me to come up there and play for him. I just think he is a great guy, and I look forward to playing for him and the rest of the Ole Miss staff."
But again, winning played more of a role than anything else in his decision.
"They have been to the Super Regionals three years in a row. They are just an out or two away each year from breaking through. I want to be a part of that group that finally gets there. That would be really neat thing to go through and tell my kids about it way down the line. That really was the deciding factor, having a chance to be a part of the group that finally got them back to the World Series."
Who else was under consideration before David decided on Ole Miss?
"My dad played for Texas A&M, so of course they were in it. Nebraska and Kentucky were the other two schools I was looking at real hard."
David hit .356 with 7 HR's, 26 doubles, and 64 RBI's as a freshman for Texarkana.
"When I first came in, I was only benching around 205 and weighed 180. Now I am up to 200 pounds and I am benching 280. I thought that really helped me last year. My biggest asset at the plate is my power. I developed my power once I got into the weight room here. I hope I can make as much improvement in year two as I did in year one. In the SEC, you have to be able to hit for power, and I think that fits my strengths."
What type of overall player would David consider himself?
"I am just a guy who will get out there and work hard while I am trying to get better all of the time."
David marks Ole Miss' 7 commitment for the Fall of '07 class.
