"Yea, I guess it is kind of weird that I have never seen their campus yet," added Daniel Calvin. "It just cost so much for us to go out there on our dime, so I needed to to wait until they could pay for my trip."
What will Calvin key in on while he is on his first official visit?
"I want to find out if there are going to be a lot of people there. I want to see how big the school is and how much fan support they get. I just want to see how the campus looks and see what game day is all about down there. I want to focus on their defensive linemen. Is everyone going crazy on game day? I will look at their play calling, just everything going on out there on the field. I also want to see what the ladies are all about (laugh)."
Calvin will arrive to the Ole Miss campus early Friday morning in time for practice.
"I really wanted to see them practice so I can get an up close look at their defense and what kind of drills they run. Are their drills different than what we do out here? I also want to see how a college offensive line looks. Are they really that big and good?"
Daniel committed to the Rebels last February. How did Daniel and Ole Miss' relationship start?
"Well, they were the first ones to call me. They were calling me every week just letting me know they were interested, and then they started calling my parents a lot. My mother really likes them, so, that is how that (commitment) happened."
It is a good thing that the Rebels spotted Daniel first, as the competition for Calvin's services have become stiff, to say the least.
"My latest offer is from Oklahoma. But right now I have offers from, of course Ole Miss, California, Nevada, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Utah, and I think that is it. Oh yea, UTEP has offered me as well."
What are the competing schools telling Daniel?
"They just want me to know that I have a scholarship offer, and if I ever changed my mind (about my commitment), that they have a spot waiting on me. They pretty much want me to come on a (official) visit."
What does Daniel say back?
"I listen to them about taking a visit, but they know right now I am committed to Ole Miss."
Which college is trying to change Calvin's mind the hardest?
They call every week, never miss a week. They really/really want me to come out
there (to school)."
While Daniel insists that his commitment is solid to the Rebels but this weekend will be the tell tale sign.
"I am solid, but if I like what I see this weekend, yea, it will be definite."
What makes Daniel such a wanted man?
"Well, I feel like I have a quick get off. A lot of people think because I am this big; I am not going to be agile. But when they see me play, they are shocked at how well I move for a big guy."
Daniel has helped Bakesfield College to a 5-0 record and a #1 ranking in the latest J.C.-Gridwire poll.
Last season Calvin was named All-Conference and in his senior campaign for Bakersfield High, he was named the Valley's Defensive Player of the Year.
