Rebels bringing in juco TE for official visit
"They asked me if I was willing to make a position change," stated the 6' 5", 245 pound Gerald Harris. "They wanted me to move to tight end. I asked them if I made the switch, was it going to hurt my status as a D1 prospect. They said it would improve it, if anything. I put my trust in them, and it has worked out great. Everything is looking good. My stats are pretty good (8 catches for 50 something yards and 2 TD's through five games)."
Two colleges have noticed the standout tight end.
"I am actually taking an official visit to Ole Miss this weekend, and Kansas watched me play in the spring. They have been talking to me ever since. There are some more schools who are recruiting me, but those are the main two."
When did the Rebels contact Harris?
"They started recruiting me after my third game. They called me after that game, and Coach Rodriguez has been calling me every since."
What attracted Ole Miss and Kansas to Gerald?
"They like my size. When they saw me play at TE, both of them said I was just what they were looking for. Someone with some size who can run and block. See, I played offensive tackle my whole career too. I started both ways at Carrol (OT/DE). Blocking comes natural to me. I ran a 4.8 forty at scout day here, so they were impressed with that too. I am benching over 300 pounds and run a 4.7 forty at 6' 5", 245. There are not many tight ends with my size, strength, and speed."
What is Ole Miss telling Gerald?
"They are just telling me that they are real excited about me. They like the way I play, and they think I can become the next great TE in their system. Their offensive coordinator (Dan Werner) calls me a lot too. He use to be the offensive coordinator at Miami, and he said that I can be his next Kevin Winslow. They have two senior tight ends right now, so they need someone to come in there in the Spring and take over. They have one tight end that is an offensive tackle, and one tight end who played nose guard last year. That is all that they have coming back. They really need someone to take over next year, and hopefully I can be that guy. I will know more when I go on my official visit this weekend. Hopefully I will get a scholarship while I am over there. I do not know. I will just have to wait and see."
What about Kansas?
"They are basically saying they have some TE's that are seniors, and they need someone to come in the Spring and take a starting spot. They have one high school tight end prospect that is committed, but they said they do not want to put too much stock into a freshman coming in there and starting, so they need a juco guy to come in there and fill a spot."
Has Harris set up his official visit to Kansas yet?
"No, but I will probably do that when I get back in from Ole Miss."
Gerald has been on the Dean's List both semesters (3.6 GPA) at Navarro College and will graduate in December.
