"I thought that was a good experience for me," added Tavares Pressley. "You have to understand I played QB my whole life until I went off to junior college, so I needed to gain some experience at just playing tailback."
Pressley decided to transfer within the juco ranks of California and took his show to one of the powerhouse programs in that state, El Camino CC.
"I had a good friend who played over there, and I knew all about their program. I knew they had a chance to win the national championship this year, so I wanted to be a part of that. I am all about winning. I wanted to try and go get that ring."
Later that summer, Pressley attended the JCFootball.com junior college combine at Citrus College and measured in at 6' 0", 208 and ran two sub 4.5 forties (4.48 and 4.44).
Colleges took notice.
"I got a verbal offer from Nebraska shortly after that combine. Colorado sent in a written offer. Ole Miss did too. Things really started to pick up for me after that combine."
Combines are nice, but it is the games that matter, and Pressley has not disappointed.
"Things are going well. Since we lost, we bounced back and have not lost a game since. We are ranked #2 in the nation (7-1 record) right now, and we are trying to win the national championship. We close the regular season out this weekend against Orange County."
El Camino is absolutely loaded at tailback this season as they are playing four running backs in their rotation that are all projected to play on the D1 level next year.
"Nobody gets over 10 carries in a game. I get 8 or 9, Jeremy Francis gets 8 or 9, Kenny Ashlee (Ole Miss commit) gets 6 or 7 carries and Greg Ray gets like 4 carries a game. It is a nice rotation. People ask me if it is hard playing in a rotation that big, and I tell them that it is not hard because I played QB growing up. Last year I did not get but 11 or 12 carries a game, so I am use to it. Yea, every back would like to get it 20 carries a game, but I do not care about sharing it. I just want to win."
Pressley has made the most of his carries as he has rushed the ball 67 times in seven games of action and has amassed 680 yards and 11 TD's, good for a 10 yard clip every time he touches the ball.
"I like the great big runs. When I am in the backfield. I just black out everything and vision going all the way. I am just focused when I get the ball. I feel like there is nobody that can stop me."
Which colleges is Tavares keeping in phone contact with?
"Right now, I just got this new phone. I have not spoken to anybody on the phone. My coach has. I am just trying to win a national championship."
Tavares set up his first official visit with Ole Miss (11/17) and is in talks with setting up another one.
"I am thinking about setting one up with Arizona. My coaches talked to them yesterday. My coaches told me about the visit. They want me to go out there, but I have not made my decision yet."
Who are the colleges that have offered that are keeping in phone contact with Tavares' coaches?
"The only schools that I know of are Kansas State, Arizona, and Ole Miss. Those are the only ones that I know of and coach was saying something about Tulsa."
What stands out about each school?
- "I do not know too much about them. I have not been talking to too many
Ole Miss - "I talk to Ole Miss, I can't really say too much because I did not talk to them that much. But Ole Miss seems pretty cool so far. I like Coach Frank (Wilson). He seems like a cool dude. I will see what it is all about on my visit."
"Arizona - "I think they are about to start winning pretty good. I talk to them, but I have not talked to them that much to just really know what they are about. They seem pretty cool so far."
Are there any colleges out there that Pressley would like to see step up their recruiting efforts with him?
"To tell you the truth, I am from Florida, so it would be nice if some Florida schools starting offering me. But I do not care which school I sign with. I just want to go in there and help them win games. That is what type of back I am."
What will be the main factors in Tavares' decision?
"I am just looking to win games. I want to go to a team where it is all about winning games because you can be better than everybody and doing real good, but it is not going to feel good if you are not winning games."
