MSU commit takes in Ole Miss game
"I did not get to play this year," added a dejected and well spoken Devin Jones. "I tore my ACL in the Spring. Of course, our season did not go as hoped. It has been hard watching it unfold, but we got through it. We did not make the playoffs, but they got after it pretty good. They have no reason to hang their head though. They gave it their all. "
Despite the injury, Jones has been keeping his body in shape.
"I am getting ready for power lifting, so that is good. I am ready to defend my title. I won the 242 pound division last year in Class 4A, and my mind is focused on repeating. I am not going to be able to squat as much as I did last year because I do not want to risk anything, but I have gained a lot of good weight since my surgery. I was down to 220 after my surgery, but I have put on 30 good pounds since then. I actually weighed 255 this afternoon, but that was after a good lunch (laugh). You know how grandma cooks. She has got to keep her baby full and I am glad for it (laugh). Really though, I have been doing a lot of lifting, especially on my bench. I have not been doing any running because the doctors still have not cleared me to do any cardio. But I am much stronger in my upper body than I was last year. I feel good about where I am at right now."
How is recruiting going?
"MSU has got me, but Ole Miss is trying really/really hard to get me down there. But of course, MSU is doing really well. I love that school. I think Coach Croom is doing an excellent job with the Bulldogs."
While Jones remains solidly committed to the Dogs, he has had a chance to take in a couple of unofficial visits to Ole Miss this fall.
"Yea, I have. I went over to the Ole Miss/Alabama and Ole Miss/LSU games. My uncle played for Coach Freeze at Briarcrest, so we have a pretty good connection. But mainly, I just went over there to watch a good game. They told me to come down, but I did not tour it that much. I just went into the recruiting room and spoke with Coach Freeze. He asked me how I was doing and all of that usual stuff. He has done a really good job recruiting me, but I think MSU is where I need to be. Coach Smith has done a good job recruiting me too, and he makes it feels like family."
Are anymore schools in contact with the 6' 2", 250 pound end?
"Just MSU and Ole Miss. Nobody else has called or sent any letters or anything like that. Those are pretty much the two schools that have been recruiting me from the start."
Will Devin take any official visits, outside of MSU?
"I really have not decided yet, but I do not think I should visit Ole Miss. I do not know yet if my scholarship will be pulled by Coach Croom if I visit Ole Miss. If I do not let him know that I am going to take an official visit to Ole Miss, my offer is subject to being pulled, and I do not want to risk that. So if I do visit Ole Miss, it will only be by his permission."
