Ole Miss 0-2 in Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. – Montana shot 49.2 percent from the field and scored 28 points off 24 Ole Miss turnovers as the Lady Griz earned an 84-77 victory over the Lady Rebels Sunday evening from Dahlberg Arena in the final game of the Lady Griz Holiday Classic.

Lady Griz junior guard Mandy Morales led all scorers as she tallied 20 points, including 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. Fellow guard Sonya Rogers finished the contest with 15 points, while tournament MVP Johanna Closson and Laura Cote scored 14 and 10 points respectively.

Senior forward Carla Bartee paced the Lady Rebels with 18 points to go along with seven rebounds. Junior center Shawn Goff, who was named to the Lady Griz Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team, finished with 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Robertson chipped in with 12 points, while senior guard Lindsay Roy nearly reached double figures with a season-high nine points on 3-for-4 shooting from three-point range.

After building a double digit lead heading into halftime, Montana maintained at least a 10 point lead for the first four minutes of the second half. Bartee cut the Lady Griz lead to eight points at 46-38 with a jump shot at the free throw line. Morales immediately answered with a 3-pointer on the other end to spark a Montana run that saw the Lady Griz build an 18 point lead with just over eight minutes left to play.

Trailing by 14 points with exactly six minutes remaining, Ole Miss used an 8-3 run capped by a three-pointer from Roy to crawl within nine points at the 3:49 mark. The Lady Rebels would then cut the lead to eight on two different occasions and seven points on one occasion, but the Lady Griz were 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to secure the win.

Montana used a blistering 48.4 percent shooting from the field in the first half, including 53.3 percent from three-point range, to open up a 40-28 lead at halftime. The Lady Griz also capitalized on Ole Miss miscues in the first half as Montana turned 14 Lady Rebel turnovers into 20 points.

The Lady Griz sprinted out to a 6-0 lead just over a minute into the back as Morales and Dana Conway connected on back-to-back 3-pointers. Ole Miss responded as sophomore guard Shantell Black stole the ball from Morales and raced for a layup on the other end to make the score 6-2. Montana, however, answered with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to open up a 14-2 advantage.

Trailing by 11 points midway through the half, Ole Miss used a 13-7 run to cut the Montana deficit to just five points with just under seven minutes remaining when Bartee hit a jumper in the lane. Minutes later, sophomore guard Bianca Thomas nailed a deep three-pointer to put the Lady Rebels within four points with less than five minutes remaining.

Morales capped an 8-2 Montana run over the final two minutes of the first half as she hit a three-pointer with five seconds left on the clock.

Ole Miss returns to action Thursday at 7:00 p.m. when the Lady Rebels host Central Michigan in the final non-conference game of the regular season from Tad Smith Coliseum.
