Ga. WR commits to Rebels

The Rebels are looking for tall receivers to complement their offense, and they now have one with this latest commitment.

Buford (Ga.) High School WR Melvin Harris (6-7, 185) visited Oxford over the weekend, and according to his mother, is now ready to be a Rebel. The 1st Team All-State performer compiled 660 yards on 30 catches, while snagging eight touchdowns this past season for the 15-0 AA state champions.

"Melvin called me and let me know that Ole Miss is where he is going to go to school," Mrs. Harris said. "He was extremely comfortable with everything and loved the place. Southern Miss was trying to get him to go down there, but he is finished now that Ole Miss has offered."

Harris was one of the many official visitors this past weekend and was impressed with the hospitality and passion of the school and town.

"It was just everything," his mother said. "The coaches made him feel welcome as did the students and the entire community. Melvin was amazed with the hospitality and how nice it all was."

Harris was late on most schools radar due to not seeing the field until his final season, but the WR runs his 40 in the 4.5s to go along with his 6-7 frame. He is projected to be a full qualifier as he has an acceptable score on the SAT and a B-plus core grade point average.

"He has just kept on working and stayed dedicated," Mrs. Harris said. "My son had faith that an offer would come and didn't get down about not playing. He was stuck behind a senior for a year but did well when his chance came. It is a really proud day for both of us."

Harris' other offers included several smaller schools including Ga. Southern. He was receiving interest from USM, Auburn and South Carolina.
