Linebacker gives pledge to Ole Miss

The big recruiting weekend continues to pay dividends as Westover HS linebacker Jason Jones has committed to Ole Miss.

Jones (6-2, 220) was a force during his final year of prep action with 154 tackles (16 for loss), three sacks, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions. He earned local player of the year honors.

"It was the academics, the atmosphere, everything," Jones said of Oxford and Ole Miss. "They gave me my best offer, the academic and athletic facilities are outstanding. I cancelled all other visits. I'm done."

Jones is planning to major in exercise science and first mentioned the Fed Ex Learning Center as a swing point.

"The academic center was so nice," Jones said. "I really want to concentrate on academics, and the coaches showed they cared about that too. I was going to leave after one day, but I liked it so much that I stayed. I am really glad I did because that is when I saw the whole campus."

The linebacker, who also picked up offers from Louisville and South Carolina among others, plans to put on another 20-25 pounds and can play in the middle or outside. He has been clocked at 4.59 in the 40.

"Coach Nutt just told me that they really wanted me," Jones said. That is good enough. I knew Coach (Tyrone) Nix from being recruited by South Carolina. I knew I had to be where he was."

Dustin Mouzon served as Jones' host.

"Dustin was really cool. I hope we can hang out next year even though he is a senior."
