Wet Day at Swayze Shortens Intrasquad

Ole Miss moved the Sunday baseball intrasquad up an hour to accommodate the inclement weather, but Mother Nature allowed only four innings in what finished as a 2-0 White Team win.

Kyle Henson and Cody Overbeck both hit solo home runs off Scott Bittle to provide the scoring. Four pitchers went two innings apiece. Nathan Baker, Drew Pomeranz and Justin Cryer put up scoreless outings.

The rain poured down for the entire scrimmage and puddles were evident over the entire playing surface. The pitchers were able to get in quality work, but stats are useless due to the fielders unable to move on the wet field. Avoiding injury was a bright spot for the morning session.

Wade Broyles, Phillip Irwin, Rory McKean and Garrett Duff missed their action because of the weather.

Tim Ferguson provided the comedy as he let go of his bat during a swing in the final inning. The bat flew into the third base dugout and sent the occupants scattering onto the wet field. Taunts making fun of the freshman ensued.

Ole Miss will practice three days this week before more intrasquads Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All healthy pitchers will be scheduled for three innings apiece.

Other Notes

I saw Craig Rodriguez last week hanging around the baseball office. He is in Oxford until he reports to the Rockies spring training site in a couple weeks. Rodriguez was getting in some bullpen work at the indoor complex. Justin Henry is also here working out until reporting for the Tigers. He appeared on our radio show a few weeks ago and is hoping to begin this year in High-A. Craig also said that Tommy Baumgardner was doing very well and could substantially move up this season. The Rockies are looking at making Baumgardner a left-handed specialist. He was very successful as a closer for the Asheville Tourists in 2007.

Michael Park sat beside me at the scrimmage today and said he felt pretty good during his first live action yesterday. Park said he was a little too hyped up and was inconsistent but was pleased for the most part with how his body responded.
