Hoops star ready to do his thing at Ole Miss

Murphy Holloway (PF, Irmo, S.C.) - The '07 Class 4A Player of the Year has a chance to become South Carolina's first repeat winner in years.

"I am averaging around 28 points and 18 rebounds a game this year," stated Murphy Holloway. "I am shooting around 40% from 3 point and 78% from the free throw line. I have really stepped it up, shooting wise."

Last year the Ole Miss commit averaged 25 points and 13 rebounds a game. He took Dutch Fork to the 3rd round of the playoffs before finally bowing out. The 6' 7", 195 pound senior was also named the Columbia Area Player of the Year, Region 7(4A) Player of the Year, and was rated the #1 Junior in the state of South Carolina for his performances on the court.

What makes the Scout.com 4 Star (#17 overall power forward) so good?

"I can do it all. I beat people off of the dribble that are bigger than me. I play the three, and they put a big man on me because of my size. I am just too quick for them."

What part of Murphy's game has improved the most this season?

"I say my dribble and pull up game. My mid-range game. That has improved the most. I am shooting close to 58% from the field."

Most of the country's top high school prospects sign in the early signing period but Murphy was left unsigned in November.

"I just did not know where I wanted to go at that point. I was down to Clemson, Maryland, and Ole Miss but I was not totally for sure. But I am all Ole Miss now. I can't wait to get over there and help them win a national championship."

Why Ole Miss?

"I just fell in love with Coaches Ward and Kennedy. Coach Ward came in and talked like he was ready to get things done. I know the team is doing good this year. I want to be a part of something special. People do not think of Ole Miss as a Sweet 16 team, but we are going to be. I want to be a part of that. I have been keeping up with Terrance Henry, Terrico White, and those guys. We have one of the best classes in the country coming in next year. You add our class to the guys they got coming back, and we are going to shock the nation, just wait."

When did Ole Miss start recruiting Holloway?

"They started recruiting me in 11th grade, but they did not think I was showing them high interest, so they came back in on me last summer."

What attracts Murphy to Andy Kennedy?

"I like to get up and down the floor. They do not have all of the guys they need to press right now, you know, where you get after it for a full 40 minutes. My being 6' 7", and being as athletic as I am, I can bring that added dimension to press and get it up and down the floor. I know Terrance Henry is going to help us out a lot too. I have played a lot against Terrance in the AAU games, and he can really get it up and down the court. Terrico (White) can too. All three of us have been competing against each other for a long time."

Terrico White actually helped recruit Murphy to Ole Miss.

"I played against him in the Chick-Fil-A Classic this summer. I told Coach Ward he was the real deal. Terrico came up to me and told me that I needed to join him and Terrance at Ole Miss. He said if us three sign, we can get some things done. I had never visited Ole Miss before I committed. But Terrico told me it was a nice place, had nice facilities, classes, and he said the fans were crazy about basketball over there. He pretty much sold me on Ole Miss. We are going to be the three amigos. All three of us keep in contact weekly. We ask how our season is going and things like that. We can't wait to get to Ole Miss and do our thing. We talk about every week. Now it is getting about that time. I am practically counting down the days."

Which colleges offered Holloway a scholarship?

"I received written offers from South Carolina, Clemson, Auburn, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Maryland, Oregon State, and Oklahoma State. There were some more who said they were going to offer me if I committed, but they never sent anything in the mail to me."

Murphy had a chance to watch two of his finalist play earlier this year.

"Yea, the Clemson and Ole Miss game was a lot of fun for me. I was having fun with a lot of their guys. I told them they better get use to it because we are going to do nothing but get better when we get down there. One of the Clemson coaches told me that they would have beaten Ole Miss if they would have had James Mayes playing. They love to make a lot of excuses at Clemson (laugh)."
