Last Time Out
The Rebels dropped the Tempe Super Regional to Arizona State 2-0. Ole Miss lost a 3-1 lead, before falling 4-3 in game one. Ole Miss' season ended with a 7-1 defeat a day later. Minnesota went 1-2 in the San Diego Regional. The Golden Gophers fell to Cal-State Fullerton and Fresno State, with a win over San Diego in the middle.
Ole Miss leads the overall series 7-5, and Mike Bianco owns a 4-1 career mark against Minnesota. The two teams last met in 2007 during the Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis, Minn. The Rebels earned the tournament title and split a double-header with the Golden Gophers. Minnesota finished the tournament 2-2 with one win and one loss against both Ole Miss and Arkansas. The Big Ten school opened the 1992 season in Oxford and claimed two of three. Ole Miss is 36-20 all-time against the Big Ten.
Minnesota returns the bulk of its defense up the middle but is searching for players to step up in the corner outfield positions and at first base. Nate Hanson led the Gophers in home runs and RBI last season and returns at third base. Derek McCallum moves over from second base last season to short this year, while Jeremy Chlan completes the middle infield. Senior Jeff DeSmidt will be behind the plate. The Golden Gophers hit .311 as a team last season but lost 12 players from the 2007 club. They fielded .962 as a team. The Minnesota pitchers are scheduled to be on a 60-65 pitch count limit.
