Can Ole Miss turn Darius Winston?

Perhaps the most coveted cornerback in the S' East Region has picked up yet another impressive scholarship offer this morning.

"It is getting crazy around," added West Helena assistant coach, Buck Willie. "South Carolina just called and said they will be putting in an offer in the mail today."

That is the norm these days as scholarships have come in from coast to coast from schools like Notre Dame, Miami, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, Memphis, and Arkansas State.

"There is someone new almost everyday that comes into the picture," commented Coach Buck. "The mail and calls we get are unbelievable. I have never seen anything like it."

What makes this 6' 1", 180 pound cornerback so special?

"His speed. We timed him at a 4.28, and his strength at the line of scrimmage allows him to press the bigger receivers. He loves to press in man coverage. There are just not that many corners around who have his size, speed, loose hips, and strength. Darius is the total package. He will be playing on Sundays one day."

Darius also believes his strengths lie in press coverage.

"I love to get in the wide receiver's face. I can also get to the corner on anybody when I am returning punts, and I can beat anybody deep when I am playing receiver," added Darius Winston.

Winston was a force in the return game as he took two kickoffs and two punts to the house last season, in addition to his two picks and 40 solo tackles. He also had one catch for a 60 yard TD during his brief time at receiver.

The lock down corner made a commitment to Arkansas right after signing day.

"Arkansas is a school I always loved watching. My family are big Arkansas fans, so I can grew up a Hawg fan. I also liked what they did with Ahamad Carroll, with me being a corner and all."

But there is one school outside of Arkansas that could be factor when it is all said and done.

"You know Coach Nutt is my boy. That is what got me liking Arkansas. I went over there to their Jr Day, and I just love their coaches. I like what they are trying to do with that program. I was also impressed with their facilities, academic support, and campus. I was not expecting it to be that nice down there. I did not know their weight room was that good, and I did not know their indoor facility was like that. All of their facilities are just top notch. And me and Coach Vaughn are real tight, just all of those guys. That is pretty much it right there, their coaches. I am going back down there for their 3 Day camp with Eric (Smiley), Turel (Williams), and Deondre (Johnson) in June so I can really get a look at everything down there."

Despite the high praises for Coach Nutt and his staff, one thing remains certain.

"After that visit, Ole Miss has a good chance, but I am still a Hawg."

Winston has only taken in visits to Arkansas and Ole Miss this Spring, anymore on tap?

"Darius will probably go visit LSU's Spring game, Michigan's Spring game, and probably Alabama's Spring. We are going to take our kids down there to the 3 Day Camp at Ole Miss, and take them up to Arkansas' Sr Camp. That is pretty much it for now," added Coach Buck. "I am sure there will be some more visits that will pop up between now and the end of the summer, but that is all that we have discussed."

One thing is for certain, West Helena will be the hottest spot in the state of Arkansas for college recrutiers with the foursome of Darius Winston, Eric Smiley, Turell Williams, and Deondre Johnson.
