Rebels bring in Jackson (MS) TE for Jr Day

The 6' 4", 220 pound tight end out of Jackson (MS) had 30 catches for 527 yards and 7 TD's as a junior.

Mississippi's leading tight end, yardage from the line of scrimmage, returns for his senior season and is looking for even bigger things.

"I want to get over a 1, 000 yards this year," added the matter of fact Emmanuel Jefferies. "I think it is a realistic goal of mine. I averaged over 17 yards a catch last year. I want to get that to over 20 yards per catch this year. I also want to have 10 plus TD's."

But team goals still remain the main focus.

"We think we have a shot to bring home the trophy this year. Last year was kind of a down year for us, but we are returning a lot of great players with a lot of experience. That is everyone's focus, to get to Jackson Memorial (where the state championship games are held)."

What makes Jefferies so effective at tight end?

Emmanuel Jefferies

"I can really go up and get the ball. I have wide receiver skills in a big man's body. And I block like another offensive lineman. I am a very physical blocker."

Emmanuel had a chance to attend his first Jr Day this Spring at Ole Miss with teammate, OT Emmanuel McCray.

"It was great. I enjoyed their facilities and stuff. They made me feel welcomed. I like Ole Miss."

This was Jefferies first trip to Oxford.

"I learned so many new things while I was up there, but the thing that stuck out in my mind is that I did not know it was that accomplished. I mean, I knew it was a good school, but I had no idea they had that kind of history. I was looking at all of those national championship banners and conference championships, and it kind of blew my mind."

The overall atmosphere impressed Emmanuel the most.

"I just liked how they welcomed me into their family. They showed me and McCray good ole Southern hospitality. The players at Ole Miss were also so nice to us. I liked that. It is like a big family up there."

Jefferies got a chance to take in the Rebel's scrimmage.

"I went over to my position coach and watched their scrimmage. They have a nasty defense. I mean, they are mean out there. Their offense is good too but their defense is bad to the bone. I did like their QB a lot. He throws the rock now. I know he is only a sophomore so that is real attractive for me. I thought the wide receivers were good too, and I thought the tight ends were competitive."

Emmanuel is also being heavily recruited by another Mississippi school.

"MSU calls my coaches a lot, and I have talked to them a few times. They want to get me up for a visit pretty soon. I think I am going up there pretty soon to check out their campus. Southern Mississippi wanted me to come to their Jr Day but I missed it. They are on me hard too."

Anybody else?

"Marshall and Tennessee."

What stands out about the Dogs?

"My cousin, Jamon Hughes, goes to school there. He says I will like Coach Croom's style. They make sure you stay on top of your grades."

What about the Eagles?

"They have so much tradition. All they do is win. I like USM a lot too. They have a good football program."
