Rebels hot after Florida wide out

The 6' 3", 215 pounder entered his junior season with not that many expectations for his squad, but Duncan U. Fletcher High (FL) caught everybody by surprise.

"Our sophomore year, we went 3-7. Nobody expected us to step out like we did. We went 9-3," added Lamar Scruggs. "We had real good senior leadership and stayed focused and played to the best of our ability. We feel like we are going to be the team to beat this year our Class (5A). We have great skilled players. We just have tremendous athletes on the field. We should go all of the way this year."

Lamar had 35 receptions for 670 yards and 11 TD's and was named All-District and All-Conference for his play.

"I have a big body frame. It gives me the ability to get between the defender and the ball. I have big hands and good eye coordination. I also run good routes and I am a team player."

Scruggs could play anywhere from receiver to tight end, but if his speed keeps improving, he will stay at wide out.

"I ran a 4.46 at the last combine. I am a consistent 4.5 guy. In track, I ran a 22.0 two hundred and a 52.6 four hundred. I qualified for Regionals but I am still nursing a ham string injury."

Recruiters have certainly taken notice.

"South Florida came by last week. Ole Miss came by last week too and Central Florida did too. Most of the schools are coming by next week. It just gives me something to look forward to."

Who came by for South Florida?

"Coach Valley came by. He is a good coach. He told me to expect them to move to a spread offense next year. They want to put me in the slot and run corner routes. Coach Valley just basically told me how they would use me."

What about Ole Miss?

"Coach Vaughn sounded like a real good guy. I did not really know much about Ole Miss. Coach Vaughn and the rest of those guys came from Arkansas, so you can not look at Ole Miss as Ole Miss but rather Arkansas when you see Ole Miss now. They are trying to change everything around over there now. I was a big fan of Arkansas when that staff was over there, so that kind of caught my attention."

Coach Vaughn followed up his school visit with a call to Lamar and his parents.

"He is just a really good guy. He made me feel real comfortable around him. He talked to my mother for a while. I thought that was great. Nobody else has really made an effort to get to know my parents, so my mother was really impressed with that."

And what did Central Florida have to say?

"I spoke to Coach Panagoose. He told me about the school and how they use their WR's. He said he can take me to the next level."

Lamar is holding a boat full of offers and two new ones came in last week.

"Up to this point, I have 17 or 18 offers, I think. I just got offered by Tennessee and Purdue. Coach Scott for Tennessee said he was coming by this week to make my offer formal. So far, I have offers from Florida, FSU, FIU, FAU, South Florida, Central Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Vandy, Illinois, N.C. State, West Virginia, Maryland, Arkansas, Louisville, Purdue, Michigan, BYU, and Rutgers."

Scruggs does not have a "favorite" list yet.

"At this point, I can not really say right now. I am trying to narrow it to 5 schools and try to take it one day at a time. I want to see as many teams as I can."

Like who?

"South Carolina, Florida, FSU, Louisville, Clemson, Michigan, West Virginia, Ole Miss, and Tennessee are a few that I want to visit this summer."

Any camps on the horizon?

"If I do go to a camp, it will not be but for a 1 Day camp. I am not sure which ones right now."

Scruggs carries a 3.0 GPA and a 16 on the ACT.
