Tupelo 4 Star Wide Receiver Chad Bumphis, one of the top players in the state of Mississippi, was burning defenders left and right in the one-on-one passing drills at Ole Miss' Senior Camp yesterday.
Then, something unexpected happened.
As Bumphis was making a cut on an out pattern, something popped and Chad went down. Everyone near heard the distinct pop and the first thing in their minds was "knee."
"The ankle will be OK," said Bumphis Sunday morning. "I don't know what happened, but I rolled it over and I heard it pop. It's swollen a little and is a little sore, but it will be fine by the time we start practice next week."
About camp, Chad was impressed, as he bumped Ole Miss into his top 5 schools of choice.
"I liked it a lot. In my recruitment, everything is still wide open, but right now my top five are Ole Miss, State, LSU, Alabama and Florida, in no order," he said. "If I had to pick official visits right now, I may not go to State and Alabama because I have been to both a lot of times and know what they are all about. I need to learn more about the other schools I am interested in."
What did the quicksilver wideout think of Ole Miss specifically?
"The facilities are very nice. Everything is so convenient and right there - everything you need as a football player is in one building," he continued. "I like the coaches a lot there too. Coach (Houston) Nutt and the wide receivers coach, Ron Dickerson, are great.
"I can't think of any negatives about Ole Miss. I really enjoyed it. Ole Miss is definitely in the picture with me."
Chad said he does not have a timeline for a final decision on which college he will attend, but he likes all his options.
"I'm blessed to have a lot of good schools recruiting me," he noted.
The 5-10, 180-pound Bumphis caught 37 passes for 787 yards and 12 TDs as a junior.
He was accompanied to the Ole Miss camp by Tupelo WR Justin Bean, who has committed to Kentucky.
Was Bean swayed by Ole Miss?
"He enjoyed it a lot too, but he has to choose what is best for him," Bumphis ended.
