Tennessee commit takes in Ole Miss game

The 6' 2", 235 pound Tennessee commit finished his senior season on Friday and headed to Ole Miss on Saturday to see the Rebels play.

"One of my coaches took me over there," added D.T. Shackelford. "This was my second time to see their campus. I went down there this summer too."

What was the Decatur (AL) resident looking for?

"I wanted to see how the atmosphere was and how I would like the campus. I enjoyed my visit though. The staff impressed me the most. They are really bonded together. I spoke to Coach (Tyrone Nix), their defensive coordinator, and I also spoke to my recruiter, Coach Markuson. They told me to just sit back and make the right decision. Coach Markuson is a cool person. Our relationship is pretty good, as far as him being a recruiter."

What about the atmosphere?

"Obviously with the type of game they were playing against a team like La Monroe, it was not packed, but you could tell that the people who were there were all like a close knit family. Not just the fans in the stadium, but on the campus. I liked the feel of it. The campus is nice. I got a chance to go to the Grove and watch them do the pre-game walk through. I walked around and toured their practice facilities. I liked it their. I talked to some of the regular students in the Grove, and asked them about their experiences at Ole Miss, and I did not hear a negative word. It is like a big family over there. It was unique."

Where does D.T. stand with his Tennessee commitment?

'"I am still committed.. They are telling me to make the right decision. I just spoke with Coach Chevis on the phone, and he said to just wait and see what happens at the end of the season and then make a decision from there. I really liked Coach Chevis. He is the one that recruited me to Tennessee, and he is also their LB and DC, so that was a big draw."

Shackelford is setting up some options in case things do not work out in the end with Tennessee.

"I will probably take some official visits to some schools like Ole Miss, MSU, and Vandy, along with Tennessee. I have already visited all four of those schools, and I like each one of them. I hope it works out for me with Tennessee, but if it does not, I need to set up some options."

What attracts Scout.com's #28 SLB to Vandy?

"Your degree means something at Vandy, but really, your degree means something at all of these SEC schools. You have to look for your life after football, in case you do not make it in the pros. Getting that degree from Vandy would do just that."

And MSU?

"I like their coaches. I like their whole staff."

D.T. was selected to participate in the MS/AL All-Star classic that will be played in December.
