Arkansas standout has Ole Miss on his mind

Dollarway is gearing up for its second straight 4A State Championship appearance in War Memorial Stadium Saturday. The Rebels will certainly take notes as they are hot and heavy after their star playmaker. To learn more about who this player is, read below.

"It is exciting around here," added their star playmaker, Jesse Grandy. "We play Springdale Saturday for all the marbles. That is all we asked for before the season started, just another chance to redeem ourselves. The loss to Nashville (Ark) was tough on all of us. It was hard to swallow."

Both teams enter Saturday's showdown on a 10 game winning streak. Dollarway actually lost the first three games of the season.

"We started off real slow. We lost some good players and leaders, and it took us a while to adjust. But once we beat Warren, we just took off and never looked back."

The 5' 11", 180 pounder does it all for Dollarway.

"I play QB, RB, WR, and S, but I start at quarterback and safety for us. I have been scoring a lot on defense this year. I have 8 defensive touchdowns. Six of them came off of interceptions and two of them came off of fumble recoveries."

And last season?

"I played QB and some safety but mostly quarterback."

What is the 2007 All-State and Conference Player of the Year being recruited to play on the next level?

"As an athlete."

What does an athlete mean?

"They are telling me I could play any position. Coach Horton (at Arkansas) told me I could be a punt/kickoff returner, cornerback or wide receiver. That is basically what they are all telling me. One of those three positions."

What does Jesse feel like is his best position?

"I think wide receiver because I like to catch the ball. I will go up and get the ball."

The pressure that comes from playing the quarterback position has given Grandy an advantage.

"I can just think under pressure. It is hard to explain, but the bigger the moment, the better I do. I love to have the ball in my hands when the game is on the line."

Grandy received early scholarship offers from Arkansas, Arkansas State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Tulane, and La Tech but three seem to be out in front."

"Arkansas, Ole Miss, and La Tech. Those are the ones I am looking at the hardest right now."

Jesse talks about Arkansas.

"They are a good team, but they are kind of young. They got off to a slow start, but I know it is a good place to go. Coach Horton is real cool too. He is always calling and making sure everything is going good. Plus it is the home state school."

What stands out about the Hawgs the most?

"I like their offense. It is basically like Ole Miss'."

Grandy on Ole Miss.

"Ferbia Allen is over there now, and he talks it up real good to me. I know they have a pretty good team, and they run the Wild Rebel. It is a nice place to be, and Coach Shibest is a character. Coach keeps you laughing. He checks up on me and makes sure that I am doing well. We have a real good relationship."

What sticks out about Ole Miss?

"I like how they throw and run the ball. They mix it up a little bit."

What about La Tech?

"They throw the ball, and they are D1 also. I know a little about La Tech but not that much."

The offensive scheme for the Bulldogs is also attractive.

"They throw the ball a whole lot. I love their offensive scheme."

Due to Dollarway's extended season, Jesse has not set up any visits yet.

"I am just trying to win a state championship first. Over the Christmas break, I will get my visits lined up in January."

When it does come decision time; Grandy will be looking at several different factors.

"The main factors will be, do they have my major? I want a college with a good Architect program, although sometimes I want to change my mind to a Pharmacist or a football coach. The next thing I will look at is the environment. Do I feel comfortable at that school?

Jesse reports a 3.1 Core GPA and is taking the ACT test in December.
