Ira Smith

Mississippi Gulf Coast CC defensive back Ira Smith made an official visit to Ole Miss over the weekend and liked what he saw. Read about it inside.

Cornerback Ira Smith is somewhat of an unknown commodity for most.

However, after a strong season at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, the defensive back has been getting plenty of attention from college head coaches.

Smith has offers from Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Louisville, UAB, ULM and Ohio, but traveled to Oxford this weekend for an official visit.

"Me and Demond Washington came up to Ole Miss together and we had a good time," Smith said. "I wanted to check out the coaching staff and the players and see what the atmosphere was like."

What did the 5-11, 180 pound cornerback find out?

"They're good people," he said. "The coaches and players have a real good relationship. I met with all the coaches and it went good. I liked Oxford too. It's a good town."

Smith was hosted by junior Fon Ingram. What activities did he and the Rebel safety partake in?

"We went out Friday night," said Smith. "Oxford is a good town. You can tell the fans really love football. Saturday we hung out and played video games. I had a good time."

Before the visit, Smith was hoping for an offer from the Rebels. After meeting with head coach Houston Nutt on Sunday, the JUCO corner received some good news.

"My meeting with coach Nutt went good. He offered me," he said. "I just have to take some time and think about some stuff. This isn't a decision I can make quickly."

Where does Ole Miss stand with Ira?

"They're right at the top," he said." I can definitely see myself playing there. I just have to take some time and think about it."

Will Smith be taking anymore visits?

"This is my last one," said Smith. "I was planning on visiting Louisiana Tech this weekend, but decided to come to Ole Miss. It's really between them and North Texas. I'm probably done with visits."
