What did the 6' 2", 235 pounder learn about himself from that game?
"It was just a good experience. I just played and practiced hard. I always give 100% out there on the football field, so nothing changed in that aspect. The contest just brought the best out of me."
Who was the best player D.T. went up against?
"D.J. Fluker because he is so big and agile. You would
think somebody that big would not be able to move, but he is real athletic. We
roomed together, and he is even a better person than he is a player. D.J. is just
a good guy to be around."
Austin was put out in the 1st round by Hewitt Trussville but Shackelford put up some good numbers despite a nagging ankle injury.
"I went back and forth between defensive end and linebacker. When I got hurt, they put me at defensive end, but my ankle got better and they put me back at LB. I ended up with 89 tackles, 20 tackles for losses, 4 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles. I made made 1st Team All-State for the second season in a row."
The long time Tennessee commit has decided to take in a few visits before signing his name on the dotted line.
"I am going on three visits for sure. I am going to Auburn on January 30th, Ole Miss on January 16th, and I am going to Tennessee in January. I just do not know when yet."
Does D.T. still consider himself a Tennessee commit?
"Yes sir, I am still committed to Tennessee. I got a chance to talk to their new head coach. He called me and told me that he liked my style of play. I am real versatile. I can play DE or LB. I have not spoken to their new DC because their (Tampa Bay Bucs) season is just getting over with."
Shackelford took in an unofficial visit to Ole Miss for a football game this fall and has decided to return for an official visit.
"I really like Ole Miss. I really like what they got going on down there. It is going to be a nice visit. I have gotten really close to Coaches Markuson and Nutt. I just like their whole staff, really. The atmosphere around campus is really down to earth. I just like a lot about it over there."
Auburn is trying to make a late push to ink the young man.
"Auburn came by my house last week. Mr. Perry, one of the athletic directors came to my house and spoke to my family. I also got a chance to speak to their new head coach Sunday. He told me that he wanted to get Auburn back to where it was, and he really liked my style of play. He said that he got a chance to watch me play in the All-star game and was really impressed. Coach said that I was just as good of a person as a player."
Anybody else in the picture?
"LSU came by before we got out of school. Vandy is still writing me. Arkansas has been calling lately. USM too."
What did LSU say?
"I have not had a chance to speak to their head coach, but they like how I play. They also like that I keep up my grades (3.8 GPA/18 ACT). They said I am not an (academic) risk. They actually came and watched me practice in the Fall. I have been blessed to get this much exposure."
When it does come decision time; what will be the main factors?
"Right now, I am just visiting the schools and seeing how it plays out. I just want to see how the environment and how well I will fit in with their scheme and coaches."
