Mason was also looking for a family environment and that is what he found at Ole Miss.
"I have been very impressed with Coach Nutt's strong relationship he has with his players and the energy he brings to that team. As he always says, it is one heartbeat at Ole Miss. That really sold me. I just felt like they were like a big family at Ole Miss. Tennessee's was strong too, but Coach Nutt has so much respect from his players. They will run through the wall for him. I could not have gone wrong with either school, but I just feel like Ole Miss is the best school for me."
The 2007-2008 Mr. Basketball finalist has only one sport on his mind when he arrives at the University of Mississippi.
"People ask me all of the time if I want to play both sports, but I will have too much on my mind with classes and football to do all three. I am just going to play football at Ole Miss."
Scout.com's #12 nationally rated TE had 435 rushing yards and 9 TD's on 53 rushes. Mason also had 34 catches for 460 yards and 7 TD's this past season.
"His position coach, Ernie Conwell, played in the NFL for 10 years for the Saints and Rams," added Christ Presbyterian Aca head coach, Jay Mathews. "He said he has not seen a tight end yet with more upside than this young man. Ole Miss is getting a special one. "Z" is just as good of a person as he is a player too." br>
It was, at one time, thought Z might try to play basketball and football at Ole Miss, but he says that's not the case.
"Basketball was my first love and I got some good offers, but I always wanted to compete in college on the SEC level," he said. "I had so much fun playing football this year and when I got SEC attention in football, I dropped the idea of playing basketball in favor of playing football in the SEC.
"I have been told for the past three years that my future is in football. I did not believe it for a long time, but I do now. Ole Miss will provide the opportunity to develop my football skills to the highest level and that is exciting to me."
