Tig Coming Home

Mississippi's Mr. Football for the Class of 2008 committed to Ole Miss on National Signing Day after a strong season at Hargrave Military Academy. Read about it inside.

After originally being a part of the 2008 signing class, 4-star safety Darius "Tig" Barksdale announced Wednesday for Ole Miss after a strong year at Hargrave Military Academy.

The 6-foot, 218 pounder joins teammate Bobby Massie as newcomers on the Rebel roster.

"I've wanted to go to Ole Miss since I got up to Hargrave," he said. "I know I made a mistake by not signing with them last year. I just like the staff and it's close to home. I think it's the best fit for me.

"Bobby is a good friend of mine. We plan on rooming together."

What are his goals for next season?

"I'm going to come in and work hard and lead the team to an SEC championship next year," he said. "Hopefully, that'll involve me being a starter on either side of the ball. I don't care where they put me, I just want to be out there."

Hargrave head coach Robert Prunty said Tig is versatile and brings a large skill set to Oxford.

"Tig has great leverage and vision," Prunty said. "He could be just as good of a running back as he is at safety He could be great at either position. That is what kind of athlete he is. Personally, he reminds me of Lawrence Tillman, just a strong and physical safety. The boy will decleat you now. There are not many around who hit like Tig."

Barksdale broke the Mississippi 5A class rushing record as a senior at South Panola and also helped lead the Tigers to a 60-0 mark. He totaled 2,995 rushing yards and 38 TDs his final year.
