Rebs add another piece to baseball class

Ole Miss officially added its 14th signee to the '08/'09 class when the signature of Brooks Oursler arrived. To learn more about the Nashville resident, read below.

The 6' 7", 235 pound Under Armour All-American almost ended up at Vandy or Kentucky until Ole Miss was able to grab some more scholarship money and now the rest is history.

"I signed with Ole Miss officially about two weeks ago," added Brooks Oursler. "I could not be anymore happier about my choice. Ole Miss is where I wanted to be all along. I was just waiting to see if some more scholarship money freed up, which it did."

The upcoming draft is a scary one for Ole Miss as they will most certainly lose the departing seniors to the draft in LF Logan Power, RHP Scott Bittle, LHP Brett Buckvich, C Brett Basham, and C Kyle Henson. Also draft eligible are key starters in CF Jordan Henry, 1B Matt Smith, 3B Zach Miller, RHP Jake Morgan, LHP Nathan Baker, and SS Kevin Mort while some key reserves in RHP Aaron Bennett, 2B Evan Button, OF David Phillips, and OF Taylor Hasham are also draft eligible.

Certainly they will not lose all of these players, but there is no doubt they will lose a few, and they will be looking to fill some major holes.

Brooks could end up filling a couple in all one fell swoop.

"Their coaches want me as a two way player with the possibility of playing 1B and pitching, and I could play some outfield as well. It depends on the situation with Matt Smith and Matt Snyder. They like my velocity. I average 89-91 MPH. They also like my power at the plate. I have hit 11 HR's with 25 doubles, and 59 RBI's in 88 at bats this year. I am hitting .595 on the season."

Size and power are two areas that Ole Miss wants to upgrade for next year's team regardless of who does or does not go in the draft. This year, they have inked 8 players who are 6' 2" and over and 13 of the 14 signees are all over 6' 0" tall.

It is also a nice blend of juco and high school players as they are bringing in 8 high school signees and 6 juco recruits.

"The Ole Miss coaches believe this could be their best class yet under Coach Bianco. That was another big part of my decision. I already know about a lot of those guys like RHP Jordan Cooper and SS/RHP David Renfroe. We have been competing against each other in summer league ball for a while now. We all played at the Perfect Games together. We have a big time class coming in, and I can not wait to be a part of it."

Oursler believes he brings a lot to the table on the mound too, as he has collected a 10-2 record on the mound at Franklin Rd Aca over the past two years while striking out just over two batters per inning.

"I can usually dominate with my fastball, but I locate my pitches really well. Definitely my command is my biggest strength. I rarely walk anybody. My breaking ball is one of my two main pitches although I have developed a nice change up which has helped. My curveball has a 12 to 6 break, and I locate it as well as I do my fastball. Those are my two best pitches."

Vandy and Kentucky also received official visits from Brooks this spring, but he was set on Ole Miss after getting back from his visit from Oxford.

"I loved the small town atmosphere with a big school. The school spirit was awesome too. That really drew me to Ole Miss after seeing their fans. It was the first time I felt at home on a visit. Coaches Rob, Carl, and Bianco really shot it straight to me too, and I really appreciated that. They told me that they were low on scholarship money, and they were honest with me the whole way. They let me knew where I stood, and when some more money became available, I took it as soon as I could (laugh). Ole Miss is where I always wanted to go in the first place. I just can't wait to get there in May."
