Ole Miss Football Coach Houston Nutt understands the importance of a strong Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Chapter at Ole Miss.
That is why he is lending his name, time, energy and money to the annual golf classic - The Houston Nutt FCA Golf Classic - that will be held Monday, July 13th at the Country Club of Oxford.
"The FCA has always meant a lot to me and to my former teams," said Nutt recently. "Our student-athletes face the same issues in life as everyone else and sometimes they need more than a coach can provide. That, and many other ways, is where the Fellowship of Christian Athletes comes in."
But to do that is challenging.
As most are aware, the FCA is self-sustaining and relies solely on donations and fundraising efforts to fund their work.
The annual golf tournament is one of the FCA's major fundraising events of each fiscal year.
"The FCA golf tournament not only helps an important cause, but it is really one of the last times my staff and I can relax and enjoy the interaction with fans before we get into the football season," Houston said. "I would encourage all Rebels to participate in this event.
"We can have some fun and help alleviate the financial responsibilities of our FCA chapter at Ole Miss."
The four-man scramble format will start at 7 a.m. on the 13th with registration of the teams who wish to play in the morning. That group will have an 8 a.m. tee time with a shotgun start.
At noon, a lunch will be provided for everyone during the registration of the afternoon participants, who will have a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start.
There are several ways to participate in the event.
You don't have to play or attend to help. You can sponsor a player or team.
An individual player can register for $150. A company can sponsor a hole for $150. You can be a team sponsor for $600, which includes a hole sponsorship. Three golfers can pay $900 and have one of the Ole Miss coaches play the round with them. A corporate sponsorship is $2,500 and includes a four-man team, hole sponsorship, the company name presented on all FCA tournament advertisement and a company banner at registration. Or, if you want the whole enchilada, you can be a presenting sponsor for $5,000, which includes a 4-man team, your company name on all carts, hole sponsorship and your company name prominently in all advertisement.
There's a level for everyone, and every level is important to the health and well-being of the Ole Miss FCA Chapter.
The powers-that-be at Ole Miss and the FCA are getting more aggressive with their approach to the organization.
In the past, the FCA staff on campus has been sparsely manned. The new plan is to expand the staff so the football team can have their own fulltime FCA person, basketball and baseball will have another and women's sports will have yet another.
"We feel our FCA Chapter has been understaffed in the past. We are trying to serve roughly 400 student-athletes and one person cannot do that and be a part of the necessary fundraising aspects of supporting a viable FCA chapter," said Jackson businessman and longtime Ole Miss FCA catalyst Curt Busching. "With about 200 young people - counting managers, trainers and support personnel - in football alone, we feel we have to expand for our chapter to be as effective as we want it to be.
"I have been very pleased with the input and availability of all of our coaches and administration in trying to get this revamping of our FCA Chapter underway. The golf tournament is a very big part of this venture. We hope all Rebels will step up in this mission."
To sponsor someone, register to play or become a corporate sponsor for the tournament, contact Ben Busching at email@example.com or call him at 601-624-8860.
"I think having and supporting a strong FCA chapter at Ole Miss is one of the most important things we can do as coaches and fans," Nutt said. "I cannot stress how urgent I feel it is to have the best FCA Chapter at Ole Miss.
"I hope all our fans realize the importance of the FCA and will help all they can by supporting the golf tournament and the FCA in general."
For Rebels not interested in the golf tourney, don't let that hold you back from helping the FCA Chapter at Ole Miss. Any donation to the FCA can be sent to: FCA, P.O. Box 788, University, MS 38677.
Let's tee it up with Houston!
