After stacks and stacks of paperwork, and still more to do on several players, 16 Rebel football signees will be on campus for second semester of summer school as of Tuesday afternoon.
There are several more possibles as well that could be approved in the next day or two with classes starting Wednesday, June 24th.
As most are already aware, Cordova, AL, RB Tim Simon, Lexington, TX, OL Michael Brown, Decatur, AL, LB D.T. Shackelford and Mobile, AL, DL Mike Thomas were on campus the first semester of summer school and have been working out with the team. All four of them are included in the 14 number accepted for second semester of summer school.
Simon is said to be a "typical Houston Nutt running back," frame-wise. He's 6-2, 210, as advertised and "cut."
Shackelford has also drawn some praise from early workouts. He, too, is his "recruiting size" of 6-2, 235 and has virtually no body fat.
Brown and Thomas are typical frosh linemen, we have been told, in that some body work is needed but their frames are what the coaches are looking for.
Freshmen cannot be interviewed by the media until August practice cranks up and they have had a chance to get acclimated a little to college life. As soon as we are able, we will sit down with them and try to bring you more info on their summer progress, etc.
In addition to those four, the other 10 who will be in 2nd semester summer school are: Little Rock, AR, Punter Tyler Campbell; Dollarway, AR, Wide Receiver Jesse Grandy; Lithonia, GA, Linebacker Joel Kight; Jackson, MS, Offensive Lineman Emmanuel McCray; Macon, MS, Wide Receiver Patrick Patterson; Jackson, MS, Placekicker Andrew Ritter; Cross City, FL, Running Back Rodney Scott; Tallahassee, FL, Defensive Lineman Corey Gaines; Cleveland, MS, Wide Receiver Terrell Grant; and Sugar Land, TX, Safety Dele Junaid.
Twelve walkons, including Hargrave OL Chris Gill and FB Tyler King, will also be on campus for second semester of summer school.
As noted, several more signees are diligently working to get their paperwork approved in the next couple of days so they can enroll for the summer session as well. We'll keep you posted on them as we learn more info.
QB Raymond Cotton, TE Z. Mason, DE Alex Williams and RB Korvic Neat are in that number.
Two signees, DE Craig Drummond and OL Logan Clair have been on campus since the start of the second semester and went through spring training.
* In other eligibility news, Tig Barksdale and his Mother had a long chat with Nutt at a recent camp. Tig is close to qualifying - we'll hopefully know sometime in late July or early August for sure, but it appears there are no roadblocks to Tig becoming a Rebel other than getting his academics in order. He will be welcomed with open arms into the Rebel camp should he qualify.
* There is no update on Hargrave OL Bobby Massie other than the one we had a week or so ago - he's still got two classes to pass in order to become eligible and the results of those will not be known until late July or early August.
* The Rebels are continuing with their "internal investigation" of the off-the-field incident involving signee Jamar Hornsby, a safety from Mississippi CC. Reportedly, his trial date has been postponed until early August, but the Rebel football staff is still gathering facts and contemplating Jamar's fate as a Rebel.
Welcome aboard, new Rebels!
