With the nation watching and holding its highest ranking since 1970, No. 4 Ole Miss entered Columbia playing the role of favorite against South Carolina.

But another slow start offensively, magnified by only 71 yards totaled in the first half, doomed the Rebels. Ole Miss was unable to overcome a 13 point deficit late, dropping its conference opener 16-10 in front of over 74,000 fans inside Williams-Brice Stadium.

Following the loss, head coach Houston Nutt stepped to the podium first to meet the media.

Junior quarterback Jevan Snead, who completed just 7-of-21 passes in the effort, and senior wide receiver Dexter McCluster shortly followed.
