Untimely Passing

A member of the Ole Miss family lost his life Friday. Bennie Abram, 20, tragically died after collapsing during the first day of the team's routine conditioning.

Bennie Abram, a walk-on safety from Itawamba Community College, often dreamt of playing for Houston Nutt and the Ole Miss football team.

It was in the fall of 2009 that he made his first attempt, though shoulder issues postponed the Southaven native's arrival until January.

Finally given his opportunity, Abram worked diligently under Don Decker in the Rebels' strength and conditioning program to ready himself for spring practices. He was excited, too. As Nutt says, "he always wanted to be here."

But as announced Friday, Abram's Ole Miss career was tragically cut short. The 5-foot-9, 186-pound junior was taken to the hospital by ambulance earlier in the day, after he collapsed during the first day of the team's routine conditioning.

Abram died at 12:11 p.m., several hours later.

Nutt, along with Dr. Jeff Dennis, spoke briefly with the media to address the untimely passing of an Ole Miss family member.
