The Green Wave hasn't necessarily been impressive in the early-going. But compared to the other teams the Rebels have played through a 7-1 start, Tulane will be more talented.
The Green Wave is 5-3, losing to South Alabama 7-2 Wednesday night on the road.
They opened the season losing two of three to Boston College at home. After beating New Orleans in a midweek game, the Green Wave defeated Lipscomb three games prior to losing to the Jaguars this week.
Tulane's Rick Jones, in his 17th season, continues to rebuild his program following Hurricane Katrina. The Wave actually played in the Oxford Regional in 2006 after spending the fall of 2005 displaced to the Texas Tech campus. Jones' team had won the Oxford Regional in 2004.
Tulane did not make postseason play last season but had in 2008.
Tanner Mathis still leads the Rebels in the hitting department, batting .450 with a double and four RBI. Tim Ferguson is next, batting .387 with three doubles, a home run, and two RBI.
FRIDAY, 6:30 P.M.
TU - Conrad Flynn, Jr., RHP (1-1, 2.57 ERA)
OM - Drew Pomeranz, Jr., LHP (1-0, 1.64 ERA)
Pomeranz makes his third start of the season when he takes the mound on Friday against the Green Wave. The southpaw is coming off one of the most dominating performances of his career as he struck out 15 batters and allowed no walks against Oakland last weekend. He also gave up only one run on four hits in the contest. Pomeranz retired 10 of the last 11 batters faced - striking out eight of them. Currently, he holds a 1.64 ERA and has struck out 22 batters while walking only two this season.
SATURDAY, 2:00 P.M.
TU - Matt Petition, Sr., LHP (1-1, 3.75 ERA)
OM - Aaron Barrett, Sr., RHP (2-0, 0.75 ERA)
Barrett makes his third start of the year after two solid outings in the first two weekends of play. Barrett combined for a shutout of Louisiana-Monroe in the opening weekend and followed that up with a dominant performance last weekend against Oakland. On the year, Barrett has allowed only one run on four hits with 14 strikeouts and thre walks through two starts. He leads the team with a 0.75 ERA and has pitched a team-leading 12.0 innings on the season.
SUNDAY, 1:00 P.M.
TU - Robby Broach, Soph., RHP (1-0, 7.20 ERA)
OM - Trent Rothlin, Jr., RHP (2-0, 0.82 ERA)
Junior Trent Rothlin makes his third start of the season in the series finale against Tulane. Rothlin has picked up wins in both of his previous outings. Rothlin's 11.0 innings of work is second most on the team behind Barrett and tied with Pomeranz heading into the weekend. The junior college transfer has allowed only one run on five hits in his time on the mound, serving as an effective Sunday starter this season and helped the Rebels pick up a series win against ULM and a sweep against Oakland.
