Pac-12 basketball is almost here. Campus Insiders' Jordan Cornette gets fans ready for the 2016-2017 season by predicting which team will win the conference, who will be the player of the year, and how many teams will be "Going Dancing," in March.

OREGON STATE won't need any extra motivation when the men's basketball conference slate arrives. A Civil War battle at Gill Coliseum opens the 2015-16 Pac-12 schedule for Wayne Tinkle and the Oregon State men’s basketball team, the Pac-12 Conference announced this week.

ALL IT TOOK was just about 90 seconds. During that key stretch midway through the second half, Oregon State vs. Colorado went from a back-and-forth, one-point game to OSU suddenly trailing by eight. And with the Beavs not built to come back from deficits, that was all it took to prevent them from advancing in the Pac-12 tournament. The 78-71 loss, after that Buff run, was easy to see coming.

OREGON STATE and Oregon went toe to toe for 36 minutes on the hardcourt, like two heavyweights trading haymakers in the center of the ring. Alas for Beaver fans, the final four minutes went the Ducks' way in a wild, 65-62 loss in the regular season hoops finale.

OREGON STATE HOSTS Oregon Wednesday night in a Civil War matchup that has postseason implications for both teams. Oregon State has lost five of their last six but this regular season finale tilt is at home, where the Beavs are 15-1 at Gill Coliseum.

OREGON STATE WAS up eight points in the second half at Cal and looked strong on Sunday. They had just put together one of their better offensive runs of the season. But they followed it up with one of their worst on defense and the roof caved in quickly. OSU's zone defense was effective for long stretches, but it completely broke down during an 18-0 second-half run by Cal and OSU lost 73-56.

OREGON STATE's historic 14-game home winning streak has come to an end. The Beavers fell 47-37 to No. 9 Utah in a game Thursday night in which they shot just 33.3 percent from the field. Oregon State's defense was good, better than good, as it has been all season long. But the Beavs' offense was much the same as it has been all too often this season as well, and that was a problem.

AS GOOD AS the Oregon State basketball season has been, two things continue to be daggers. The first is the Beavs are not a team built to come from behind. The second is Oregon State has been woeful on the road. Both were on display in OSU's surprising 68-55 defeat to USC, a team that had won just one conference game and was riding a nine-game losing streak.

THE HUSKIES wanted to run. Oregon State wouldn't let them. The Beavs moved to a program-best 14-0 at home with the 64-50 win over Washington. Oregon State used a harassing defense and the OSU offense finally got going over the final 20 minutes to the tune of 43 second-half points.

OREGON STATE waited until the final five minutes to settle the issue against Washington State. The Beavs forced the Cougs to play Oregon State's game during that stretch and for much of the second half in the 55-50 win. The victory ran Oregon State's home record to an impressive 13-0.

OREGON STATE GUARD Gary Payton II has been named the Pac-12 men's basketball player of the week. All Payton did was average 19.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in the home sweep of the Pac-12 Los Angeles schools.

IT WAS A tight game much of the way but the Beavs never trailed in the final 10 minutes, and they had an answer for everything the Trojans threw at them. In the end, Oregon State ground out another home victory, this one by the score of 59-55 over visiting USC.

THE SAME WSU team that managed just 43 points while losing badly to UC Santa Barbara earlier this year is now, as of Thursday against Oregon, the first Cougar team to score more than a 100 points in a game since December 2002. Tonight, the upstart Cougs, winners of three straight, will aim to stoke their mo against another team that has been turning heads and perhaps even more so -- Oregon State.

OREGON STATE WAS coming off its biggest win in 15 years. Washington was desperate for their first Pac-12 win and to end a 1-4 skid that saw them go from No. 13 in the nation to the bottom of the conference standings. Both teams played tight Thursday night in Seattle, neither played its best basketball. But UW played best when it counted late in the second half, pulling away to a 56-43 win.
