BF.C STATBOOK: Defense

THE PAST CERTAINLY doesn't dictate the future, but it sure does make for some interesting discussion. In BF.C's newest feature, we take a look at how the Beaver defense did in six categories - total defense, rushing defense, passing defense, time of possession, third down conversions and turnovers - in their last five games against non-conference competition. The results are interesting indeed..

 

NOTE: In the last five non-conference games Oregon State holds a 2-3 record. L designates the Beavers lost the game; W designates OSU won the game.

TOTAL DEFENSE

The Oregon State defense has yielded an average of 359 yards in its last five match ups - 4.8 yards less then OSU's total offense average.

OSU's last five non-conference opponents have racked up 300 yards or more yards of total offense in the last five games.

 

RUSHING DEFENSE

The run defense gives up an average of 129.8 yards per game, but has held three of its last five non-conference foes under 100 yards.

In the games the Beavers held its opposition to under 100 yards rushing OSU is 2-1.

 

PASSING DEFENSE

OSU gives up an average of 242 yards through the air - OSU averages 243 yards passing per game.

 

TIME OF POSSESSION

OSU's opponents average time of possession is 29 minutes and 58 seconds - two minutes shorter than OSU's average over the last five non-conference games.

 

THIRD DOWN CONVERSIONS

The Beavers opponents convert third downs on average 49% of the time - seven percent better than the Beaver offense's average.

Only once has the defense held an offense under 40% on third down conversions, but Men in Black lost the game.

 

TURNOVERS

The Beaver defense averages 1.6 turnovers per game in the last five match ups - a +1.2 turnover margin for OSU.
