Beavs come up short in Civil War

THE BEAVERS fought back valiantly, trimming the deficit to 10 points at the start of the fourth quarter against the Ducks. But OSU couldn't punch it in when they needed it most, and ultimately they ran out of steam, coming up short in the 114th Civil War.

Oregon State lost 37-20 in a game that was closer that the score would indicate. The Beavs had to settle for two field goals inside the Oregon 10-yard line in the second half, the latter having trimmed the score to 23-13 with 14:50 left in the game.

Oregon State couldn't hold onto the momentum, and UO took the ensuing possession in to the end zone to effectively put the game out of reach.

The Beavers scored first, a 6-yard swing pass to Jacquizz Rodgers from Ryan Katz, and then watched as Oregon methodically scored the game's next 23 points.

A fake punt by Oregon, which went for 68 yards, was the turning point but the Duck offense did a good enough job working the perimeters of the field to tip the scales in their favor. Still, the Beaver defense played one of their better games of the season, forcing a couple turnovers and holding Oregon below many of their statistical season averages on a day where star DT Stephen Paea was held in relative check through the consistent use of double and triple teams.

Receivers Markus Wheaton and Jordan Bishop were clutch, many of their catches converted third downs. Wheaton went over the 100-yard mark in receiving yards with about 8:30 left in the fourth quarter.

But Oregon's pass rush was consistent, and Katz didn't have a whole lot of time. He had numerous passes tipped, 10 by one unofficial count. And it was Oregon's defense that ended up being the difference. Quizz slugged out every one of his yards, getting close to the century mark in the third quarter but the Beavs were never able to break off those 6- 7- 8-yard runs and gather momentum offensively.

BF.C will have more a little later on from Corvallis..
