Defense Steps Up

For the first time this month, the Beaver football team ventured outdoors on a sunny day at Reser Stadium.

The bright sun shining from the west caused some problems for the receivers catching the ball, but the players enjoyed being outside, practicing on their "turf."

The teaching and learning continued between the coaches and the players as they get to know each other better.

After going through warmups and the everyday drills, the offense gathered on the west side of the field to practice run blocking, while the defense gathered on the east side of the field to practice defending against the option attack.

Following the team offense and defense drills, the first of two scrimmages ensued.

The defense stepped up their play on Wednesday during the scrimmages by not allowing Derek Anderson and the offense to complete a pass the first four downs. Often Anderson would be surrounded by the defensive line, only to look down field to see the receivers well covered.

All of the coaches, including Mike Riley, continued to focus on special teams play. The kickers made 6 of 7 field goals with the only miss being on a bad snap.

Playing on the artificial turf for the first time produced some twisted ankles and knees, but nothing serious.

The Beavers continue practice on Thursday at 4:00 PM inside the practice facility.
