Offense Improves

The sun peeked through the clouds for two hours basking the football team and the 400 plus Beaver faithful with warmth.

Excitement was in the air as the first scrimmage of 2003 was on tap. The defense sported the all black uniforms, while the offense wore white tops and orange pants.

After going through warmups for 30-minutes, the Beavers worked on punt formations, punt coverage, and punt returns for 15-20 minutes.

Josh Hawkins, James Newson, Brandon Catanese, and Aric Williams returned the punts from Carl Tobey. Newson and Hawkins each fumbled a catch. Catanese was solid catching the punts as was Williams.

The scrimmage between the first team defense and the first team offense began on the west side of the field at the 30-yard line.

On the first play, Derek Anderson hit James Newson on the north side of the field on a 5-yard curl. Anderson hit Newson again on the second play on a 10-yard pattern on the south side of the field. On the third play Anderson threw a 7-yard curl to Josh Hawkins.

The first team offense ran around 15-plays with Anderson completing well over half of his pass attempts. The spot of the ball never left the 30-yard line although the offense moved the ball well against the defense.

The offensive line looked good as they kept the defensive line out of the pocket for most of the downs. Kanan Sanchez was particularly aggressive pancaking a number of defensive players.

Adam Rothenfluh and Ryan Cole, who played running back for the first and second teams, lead the second team, but failed to score against defense.

The third team offense, lead by Danny Southwick and Anton Clarkson scored three touchdowns against the Beaver "D."

Southwick threw two touchdowns. His first touchdown was a 70-yard bomb to Hawkins. Soutwick later hit Travis Brown on a slant that went for a 30-yard touchdown.

The Beaver offense looked sharper than any other practice on Saturday. A good sign that the offensive players are getting comfortable with the playbook.

The Beavers continue practice on Tuesday inside at 4:00 PM.
