Beavs lose, but 18-6 headed into Pac-10 play

THE BEAVS' Carter Bell tallied his sixth multiple-hit game of the 2011 campaign, but the 23rd-ranked OSU baseball team left 14 on base in an 8-3 loss to UC Santa Barbara Sunday at Goss Stadium. Nevertheless, the Beavers came away with a series win over the Gauchos with a 6-3 win Friday and an 11-5 triumph on Saturday. OSU stands at 18-6 on the year – its third consecutive season with that record.

UC Santa Barbara is at 11-8 after the three-game series.

Bell went 2-for-5 Sunday and finished the weekend with five hits in three games against the Gauchos.

Offensively, however, the Beavers did little to capitalize on their nine hits. Danny Hayes and Andrew Susac each produced run-scoring singles in Oregon State's two-run eighth to pull the club to within four, 7-3. The Gauchos, however, produced one last run in the ninth for the final five-run advantage.

UC Santa Barbara tallied 15 hits off four Oregon State pitchers. Brandon Trinkwon was 4-for-5 on the day, while Trevor Whyte helped pace the club with a 3-for-5 effort.

James Nygren took the loss after going just 1/3 of an inning in a start. He allowed three hits and two runs.

Greg Davis started and picked up the win for UC Santa Barbara to improve to 3-0 this season. He scattered six hits and a run in 5 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out two.

Oregon State opens Pac-10 play Friday night when the Beavers open a three-game series against Arizona in Tucson.
