SPRING BALL DAY 12: Vaz on fire

CORVALLIS -- Reser Stadium finally saw a great day of weather and football together this spring, as the Beavers got in some final Friday scrimmaging. It was full of big hits, throws, and catches in advance of next Saturday's spring game. And QB Cody Vaz was on fire.

Vaz completed 11 of 16 passes for a total of 171 yards, including an interception and a touchdown. Mike Riley said he is more pleased with Vaz everyday and loves his composure on the field.

What's most noticeable, says Riley, Vaz plays with a lot of poise and never gets rattled.

Vaz had the play of the day when he bombed a 55-yard pass to WR Obum Gwacham early on in the scrimmage. CB Jordan Poyer tried to get a handle on it but there was no covering the 6-feet 5-inch redshirt freshman.

Gwacham continues to run better routes every practice and Riley said he's very excited to watch him come along. He had three catches for 89 yards in the scrimmage.

Vaz's single interception was snared by OLB Cameron Collins who caught the ball, ran a few feet, and attempted a backwards pass intended for S Lance Mitchell. Mitchell caught the ball and fell down.

It wasn't the play of the day but it was definitely the goofy play of the day.

Today's scrimmage was more about the receivers than the running backs.

TE Colby Prince had six catches for 62 yards and a score. Colby had a 24-yard pass on a screen play from Vaz. Riley noted that offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf has been doing a lot of work with Prince and that it looks like it's beginning to pay off.

WR Markus Wheaton caught four passes for 43 yards and a touchdown.

RB Ryan McCants had a fairly quiet day today with just 11 carries for 29 yards. RB Terron Ward had a bruised knee and had only one carry for negative three yards. RB Malcom Marable had six carries for 10 yards.

As far as the linebackers go, Riley said they aren't near a decision on the middle linebacker starter, but that eventually it will be decided. He also added that the three guys look about even thus far -- Rueben Robinson, Tony Wilson and Feti Unga.

QB Sean Mannion also had a good day with the 2's; throwing for 118 yards in completing 14 of 21 passes, also with a touchdown.

Mannion and RB Jovan Stevenson made quite the duo today. Stevenson ran for 49 yards on nine carries.

S Dax Dilbeck took his first live reps today since his knee injury last fall.

Punter John Hekker had consistent punts deep down the field today. PK Trevor Romaine made one field goal on his third attempt for the day. Riley isn't worried about Romaine's kicking and said he's had a great spring session.
