Spring Ball Day 13: Wheaton unstoppable

CORVALLIS -- The continued progress of the Oregon State football team was spotlighted Monday on what's left of the receiving corps and their energy going up against the defensive backs — most notably on WR Markus Wheaton. Among the other happenings on the day, a d-tackle many thought would contribute this season is more likely to instead redshirt, Mike Riley comments on the running backs and more.

Markus Wheaton, who's been the consistent spring ball star, had an outstanding day.

Wheaton caught pass after pass and burned nearly every defensive back the Beavers have. He's basically the only well-seasoned veteran-playing receiver, with so many guys hurt right now.

TE Colby Prince showed up on crutches and a walking boot on his right ankle today. Mike Riley said that he suffered a sprained ankle during the middle of Friday's practice but continued playing. Although there are no fractured or broken bones, it is unlikely Prince will practice any more during the spring.

QB Ryan Katz is starting to make some longer passes downfield and looking like he was never hurt.

Katz threw up a huge pass to Wheaton, who of course burned the defense like it was going out of style.

The play of the day today however, was when QB Cody Vaz passed the ball to TE Joe Halahuni during a first down play. Halahuni almost had the touchdown, but DE Taylor Henry ran him down.

Halahuni has been dealing with a shoulder issue for most of spring, but today with Prince out, he looked like he felt more comfortable all around and got into the plays more.

Vaz added yet another great ball when he threw a big pass to WR Darrell Catchings up the sideline.

Henry tipped a Vaz pass and nearly intercepted the ball intended for RB Jovan Stevenson.

DT Fred Thompson underwent shoulder surgery today and Riley said he would likely redshirt the coming year.

With spring ball nearly over, the Beavs do not have a clear cut starter. When asked about the tailback situation and how that will play out, Riley said that it will be fine and that it's a good situation.

RB Ryan McCants took most of the reps today with RB Jovan Stevenson behind him and RB Malcom Marable after Stevenson.

RB Terron Ward sat out today still nursing a knee bruise.

WR Geno Munoz was not suited up because of a nagging hamstring problem; WR Garett Hall was in uniform but did not participate in any of practice because of an ankle injury he suffered earlier in spring ball.

On the long-term injury list it remains as it has the last few weeks: WR James Rodgers (knee), RB Jordan Jenkins (shoulder), WR Micah Hatfield (hand), WR Jordan Bishop (foot), and DT Fred Thompson (shoulder).
