DAY 14: Halahuni added to long injury list

CORVALLIS -- Just when you thought the numbers of walking wounded this spring at Oregon State couldn't grow any larger, the 'ol injury list adds another name. This time it was star TE Joe Halahuni, as spring football winds down and the Saturday finale gets closer by the hour.

Mike Riley announced Wednesday that Joe Halahuni will not play in the spring game on Saturday and could possibly face surgery for a left shoulder problem that's been nagging him for a while.

Halahuni adds to the already long list of injured Oregon State football players including other starting TE Colby Prince, who suffered a badly sprained ankle in last Friday's scrimmage. The starting offense gets thinner and thinner by the practice; hopefully what's left can stay healthy until and through Saturday afternoon.

The other offensive injuries include WR James Rodgers (knee), WR Jordan Bishop (foot), RB Terron Ward (knee), WR Geno Munoz (hamstring), RB Jordan Jenkins (shoulder), and QB Ryan Katz who is still coming back from his off-season hand surgery. Keep in mind, this is solely the offensive injuries, and most of these guys are or would be potential starters in the fall.

Until then, there are the up and coming guys like WR Obum Gwacham, QB Cody Vaz, and TE Connor Hamlett who have all had great spring practices. Riley is more than excited about Vaz's improvement and said he wouldn't even blink if he had to put him in for Katz during season. Gwatcham has also made big strides and continued to make consistent catches in today's practice.

RB Ryan McCants had the most consistent day he's had all spring on Wednesday.

McCants was running through the middle drills and finding holes in the defense that showed some improvement since the first day of spring practice.

At one point in practice, the offensive line and the defensive line switched roles and the offense attempted the pass rush against the defense and the defense tried to block. Needless to say it didn't go over well.

Overall, both sides of the ball looked tired and ready to play the spring game and have a little time off. The depth chart saw Hamlett going in for Halahuni and Prince on Saturday.

Riley also said that after 14 practices, the right guard, right tackle, running back and middle linebacker positions remain wide open as of right now.

With the Beavers now down to two tight ends, Riley said that they would not be running and double tight sets on Saturday.
